Denovali is pleased to present the QUINTESENCE soundtrack composed & produced by Ricardo Donoso in May 2015. QUINTESENCE was created by installation artist Florence To (UK) and composer Ricardo Donoso (BRA) after a series of conversations and collaborations in 2014. They shared a mutual interest in the psychological research in their work and wanted to further develop this as a thematic process in a live audio visual performance. QUINTESENCE was commissioned & premiered at the Satosphere dome, Society for Arts and Technology in Montreal in May 2015. The dome, 18 meters in diameter and 11.5 to 13m high, forms a 360-degree spherical projection and is made up of 157 speakers in clusters of four around the perimeter of the dome, giving a surround sound of 39.4 channels. QUINTESENCE examines a system of elements that represent the development of the psychic process; symbols represent parts of the subconscious, telling a story of how memory may be disorientated, distorted, and dysfunctional yet acting as a linear process to individuation.

Through Ricardo Donoso’s score we see trace elements of these processes and symbols within the sounds themselves – within each musical decision. Donoso’s score continues to advance his foray into electro-acoustic hybrids, explicitly here with the use of Spectralism. Washes of lush string trio including contrabass, cello and viola are dismembered and placed through the wringer of Donoso’s custom signal processing chains. QUINTESENCE also emphasizes Donoso’s skills as a sound designer, where alien textures, Xenakian computer music and massive tone clusters collide and shatter against each other for moments of either breathtaking beauty or stretches of repulsiveness. Serene piano and vocal elements are pinned against oppressive drones and digital clatter, each voice fighting for its space in the vacuum of the dome.

Although an entirely high level digital production, the duality of QUINTESENCE that is played out is that the subject matter is really about the natural world and our relationship to it. It is about existing on a plane void of technology while discovering your identity within the context of a purely natural world, uninterrupted by contemporary hurdles.

Ricardo Donoso is a composer, percussionist and electronic musician from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil who currently resides in Boston. After having studied composition at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory he has participated in a slew of projects over the years, from holding down the drum chair in new music/avant-metal visionaries Ehnahre to scoring for recent documentary features such as Greg Barker’s “Homegrown: The Counter Terror Dilemma” (HBO pictures 2016) and the Grand Prize short film winner in Brazilian cinema “Casimiro Effect”. Donoso has since collaborated with film makers & video artists on commissions worldwide creating immersive environments & performances.
As a solo recording artist, Donoso has released music on esteemed labels such as Denovali, Digitalis, Further Records and Hospital Productions, and continues to tour throughout Europe, Asia and Latin America. He is most concerned with building and manipulating an immersive sound world that blurs the line between light and dark, hope and despair, past and future. Under a chain of progressive rhythms, cinematic textures and elegant melodicism, Donoso’s work pushes through with piercing strength, manipulating a sonic wave through space with nothing but pulse and mind blowing intensity.

On November 30th Denovali records presents ‘Calibrate’ – the new album by respected underground figure, composer and producer Ricardo Donoso. As has now come to be expected from the questing musician, once again he has endeavoured to do things differently, pushing beyond any comfort-zone parameters. 

‘Calibrate’ proffers the highest of fidelity, with blockbuster sci fi levels of production value and bombast. Donoso channels sonic spirits across fluro pointillism, futuristic industrial tribalism and more serene moments of synthetic reflection.

Having never courted accessibility, Donoso remains as unbending as ever in his approach and unwavering in commitment to his craft. Calibrate takes Donoso’s polymetric abuse and sound design to all new extremes. Conflicting rhythms and swathes of electronic debris move in tandem, to create pieces that expand and contract in on themselves.

A journey through Calibrate is an exercise in instability and failure; its aggressiveness serves as a warning against the urge to seek safety on common ground, and its entire approach seems to display a hostility towards the increasingly homogenized nature of new electronic music. 

The first in a two-part series, ‘Calibrate’ seeks to explore not only the literal connotations of instrument accuracy, gauging and tuning, as represented by the constant flux of machinery and computer noise, but also explores calibration as an adjustment; to take external factors into account, or to allow comparison with other data. With ‘Calibrate’ Donoso continues to question what music is, and what it expects of him.

Terry Waite was taken hostage in Beirut in the late 1980s, before ISIS, before smartphones, before the Internet as we know it. He endured a mock execution during the first year of his five-year captivity, which was spent mostly in solitary confinement. Years later, during a Q&A session, he was asked to identify the main thing he had learned from his ordeal. The answer, came as a shock—it was not the excruciatingly hard-won appreciation for life and loved ones that one expects to hear. “Contemporary humanity,” declared Waite, “has lost the ability to engage in productive solitude.”
