Our next offering comes from the Highlands of Scotland as Beira presents her debut, “Scry”.

Beira is a producer from Inverness that draws influence from occultism, mythology, paganism and Wicca.

The blueprint and construction of this release is a little different than usual….

Beira came up with the idea for the “Scry” project whilst doing a deep dive through the Bricolage catalogue looking for inspiration.

Her idea was to take stems/samples from eight different producers on the label and rework them into and alongside some of her own 'WIP' productions that she had been struggling to find further motivation for.

Adding these extra potions to an already simmering cauldron of her own sounds and breathing new life into what she describes as a "dormant elixir".

The result is a fascinating collections of disintegrated and mercurial soundscapes that conjure up all manner of moods but also leave room for the imagination. Atmosphere and woven textures take precedence in the process.

The more ambient numbers that begin the EP bring a raw and abstract tension before the pace picks up and we're introduced to some dark and dubby, bass driven, rhythmic tracks. Hacked apart beats that get stitched back together and swirled around. The surreal and otherworldly tension remains in the second half but now with a late night fire burning and an invitation to dance around it.

There's a strong nod to feminism and Scottish mythology throughout that tells a tale of Witchcraft and days gone by. The perfect soundtrack for the Halloween season.

"Scry" melts, bubbles, froths and crackles. It's a beguiling record from a nascent producer that gives us a peek into the past and the present. Into the potential that's yet to come. Into the future. Into oneself. Thus, to scry.

In 2000, The Wire wrote of Chartier’s work: “it’s worth stretching the ears in search of Chartier’s sequences of exquisitely sculpted sonic events, as gorgeous detail bodies forth out of the shadows”… the same holds true today.

Formed over the course of 5 years, Removed was a process of removal/erasure.
Only trace elements appear from what was. Their interactions merely a ghost of a composition — subtle echoes across the sound spectrum. A glacially paced progression of discreet relational sonic events and flows.

Inspired in part by the rigorous line drawings of American visual artist Linn Meyers, whose 2011 untitled drawing graces the cover, Removed draws the listener in to follow patterns. Meyers often creates large scale on-site works that transform a space into durational installations of seemingly endless lines. Seen from a distance these lines appear as almost natural ripples in a wall surface, but deeper, upon closer inspection, the delicate echoes and fluctuations of the artist’s hand arise from the density of details.

Chartier’s precise sound compositions work in a similar manner. Austere and shimmering, the two compositions of Removed beg for careful listening on headphones. Or let these 2 compositions play quietly amplified across your space. Either way, a physically captivating dimensional experience.

Removed is a continuing reflection on major aesthetic elements of Chartier’s artistic language as it has evolved through the years. This is Chartier’s first new solo studio album since 2013’s field recording exploration Interior Field  and 2012’s purely digital Recurrence, both released on LINE, US.

I think about the work of Mika Vainio almost every day since his sudden and untimely passing on April 12, 2017. 

His work as one half of Pan Sonic and his solo work under his own name and as Ø and Philus were and are incredibly influential to me. It was partly one of the reasons I began working with sound again in 1997 after stopping for almost 4 years, central to the evolution of my own listening. 

His sounds and arrangements were always elusive, otherworldly, unreal, strange, unsettling, often abrasive, and at the same time expressed a sheer unrelenting beauty. They seem to represent a push and pull between states, warmth and cold, silence and fury, future and past, life and death. 

I was fortunate enough to perform with and for him (in the audience) and despite his being a man of very select words, to share conversations with him. The prospect of a new release by Mika always thrilled me. I am still saddened to think that there will not be more of his work to be heard each year. 

These two pieces pay homage to Mika and the subtle and unquiet gifts he gave all listeners.

Richard Chartier (b.1971) is a Los Angeles based artist, considered one of the key figures in minimalist sound art. Chartier’s works explore the inter-relationships between the spatial nature of sound, silence, focus, perception, and the act of listening itself. Chartier’'s sound works/installations have been presented in galleries and museums internationally and he has performed his work live across Europe, Japan, Australia, and North America at digital art/electronic music festivals and exhibits. In 2000 he formed the recording label LINE and has since curated its continuing documentation of compositional and installation work by international sound artists/composers exploring the aesthetics of contemporary and digital minimalism.

He is also Pinkcourtesyphone.
