Like As The Hart Desireth The Waterbrooks

Written in 1996 for the wedding of my dear friends Richard and Kathryn Sparks, Set Me As A Seal has become my most popular work, and is widely performed by high school, collegiate and festival choirs.  This work comes in versions for both mixed and treble voices.  The accompaniment features soaring melodies for French horn and sweeping vocal lines.  Although technically a sacred work, the familiar text from the Book of Solomon is very romantic in nature and perfectly appropriate for public school use.

Set Me As A Seal (SATB)

Arkansas Traveler is the first piece in a set of three of America’s most beloved folk songs, arranged for the Pacific Lutheran University Choir of the West’s 1994 tour to Montana.  The set also includes Shenandoah and The Blue-Tail Fly.  As is befitting of its unusual text, this arrangement is set in a quirky style, complete with a section where the voices mimic a blue-grass band, and another in swung rhythm with jazz fiddle over the top. Arkansas Traveler

Arranged for the 1994 Christmas Festival Celebration at Pacific Lutheran University, this setting of the beloved carol features verses for both four-part men and four-part women, as well as a three-part descant for women’s voices on the final verse.  Works equally well with organ or string orchestra.  Published by Hinshaw Music Incorporated.

Lo, How A Rose E're Blooming

This work was originally composed as an SATB piece for the wedding of my good friends, Richard and Kathryn Sparks.  Another good friend, Judith Burns, attended the wedding, and later asked me to write a version for treble voices, which she premiered with the Brighton High School Bel Cantos Women’s Ensemble at the Michigan state MENC conference. The Blue-Tail Fly is the third piece in a set of three of America’s most beloved folk songs, arranged for the Pacific Lutheran University Choir of the West’s 1994 tour to Montana.  The set also includes Arkansas Traveler and Shenandoah.  This arrangement is a playful romp through several meter and key changes.  Here the fiddle mimics the annoying fly, following the master on his precarious horse ride, and eventually causing his demise!  Published by Hinshaw Music, Incorporated.

It was composed for the Arizona Statesmen, the men’s chorus at Arizona State University, while I was a doctoral student there. A Child My Choice was written for the 2004 Christmas Festival Celebration at Pacific Lutheran University.  The work is an interesting marriage of a text from the 16th-century poet Robert Southwell and music in a quasi-popular style.  I suppose I was trying to appeal to a wider audience with this work, while still maintaining a high quality “classical” edge.  The tenor solo is a part that might work well of one of the contemporary classical/pop crossover artists of today.  Southwell’s poem is not often used in the choral world, though the words are strikingly personal, framing a deep relationship between the poet and this lovely, innocent and yet powerful Child that was sent to redeem us all.
