Too Sweet

During the second Covid lockdown season, as a church family at Freedom Church Waddington, we were on a journey of studying through Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, and what a joy it was to be greatly encouraged, instructed, exhorted and challenged in equal measure in those days.

One verse that stood out to me, amongst many, as we worked our way through chapter two, was Paul’s encouragement and affirmation:

“And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.”
1 Thessalonians 2:13

So as we gathered each night as a household to study, to come open hearted, humbling ourselves and stirring expectation and hunger, we started revisiting this old  hymn but worked our own new musical setting and a short refrain. We began to use this song to express our heart desire that we would be shaped, remade, sanctified through the washing of the Word.  To help us ready our hearts, that we would indeed be like the Thessalonians with such a reception of the Word of God. So grateful that we are not the finished article, but works in progress through the Word at work in us.
