In Resonant Space the piano is used as a resonator, its undamped strings reflecting the harmonic series of the tuba notes played into it. It was written for Adam Brown following Deep Breathing, a piece written for him in 2012 which makes similar use of multiphonics produced by singing into the tuba. Resonant Space includes further extended techniques, such as the striking of piano strings with both a percussion mallet and the tuba’s mouthpiece.
