"I was smelling flowers in the yard, and when I stood up I took a deep breath and the blood all rushed to my brain and I woke up dead on my back in the grass. The "golden" came from the sun in my eyelids, and the "eternity" from my sudden instant realization as I woke up that I had just been where it all came from and where it was all returning, the everlasting So, and so never coming or going; therefore I call it the golden eternity but you can call it anything you want. As I regained consciousness I felt so sorry I had a body and a mind suddenly realizing I didn't even have a body and a mind and nothing had ever happened and everything is alright forever and forever and forever, O thank you thank you thank you."

This is a live recording of me playing a viola rendition of the cello solo from my larger theatrical work, "The Lost String Quartet."  It is intended to be played an octave lower on the cello. The first minute or so is an improvisation, approximating what the cello will be doing in the quartet piece preceding this, and the piece is a gesture of farewell between cellist and cello, at the moment the cello gets destroyed in N.M. Bodecker story. The accompanying photo is from my shopping mission for car parts for homemade instruments from other parts of the piece.

Richard Carr is a violinist, composer and music educator who lives in Rosendale, New York (a little under 2 hrs. north of New York City). He holds a Doctorate from Columbia University. He has recorded numerous albums under his own name and with artists such as Bill Laswell, Fred Frith, Bootsy Collins, Sly & Robbie, The Swans, Milt Hinton, Bucky Pizzarelli, ., Alan Dawson, Howard Alden, and Karl Berger. He has performed with James Williams, Kenny Davern, Doc Cheatam, Jay McShann, Jamal Nasser. He has regularly toured the US, Europe, Japan, and Mexico over the past twenty years. He is a former radio host on WDST in Woodstock, NY. In the 1980’s he lived in Boston and played sectional violin with the Boston Philharmonic.
