Some artists strive for years to develop a distinctive trademark sound, stumbling between projects while trying to find their voice. It’s not an accusation you could level at rising star Rose Robinson, whose Tigerbalm releases are infused with a trademark sound that’s alight with infectious (and often thrillingly percussive) rhythms, vivid aural colour and nods to a dizzying array of sounds and styles from around the World.

It's this hard-to-pigeonhole personal style, allied with an instinctive grasp of what works on the dancefloor – a by-product of over a decade spent DJing around her home city of London and well beyond – that’s at the heart of Robinson’s first Tigerbalm release for Ubiquity Records, ‘Kete’, and the subsequent single and debut album that will follow later in the autumn.

Like the rest of that album, the appropriately titled International Love Affair, ‘Kete’ was inspired by Robinson’s travels around the world – in this case, the unique musical culture of Bali, where Indonesian-influenced rhythms and instrumentation sit side by side with imported nu-Balearic beats (a style Eric Duncan once dubbed ‘Bali-eric’ during the period he was a resident on the island), nu-disco and sundown house.

Blessed with the stylish, queen-of-the-night vocals of Berlin-based singer Joy Tyson, also known as Snake Milk and a member of the Farafi Band, ‘Kete’ is a locked-in late-night treat. Originally recorded as an instrumental, which Tyson then wrote lyrics for and added her vocals to, the track a wonderfully low-slung chugger laden with slowly creeping chords, weighty dub disco bass, flashes of fuzzy psyche-funk guitar, echoing percussion hits (provided by long-time friend and collaborator Patrick Dawes), whispers of Indonesian instrumentation and of trippy effects.

Fittingly given Robinson’s long-standing links to club culture, her original vocal and instrumental versions come accompanied by a string of similarly inspired reworks. Veteran producer Massimo Lamagma steps up first, sticking a rocket up Robinson’s original mix and reframing it as a breathless, non-stop mix of rolling disco and funk-fuelled tribal house, before Brazilian twosome Guinu & Cardaci take the track into more tactile, soft-focus territory via sunrise-ready grooves, vibrant electrofunk synth sounds and sensationally deep chords.

Subtly disco-tinged dancefloor delight comes courtesy of the Mang Dynasty – AKA scene heavyweights Bill Brewster and Ray Mang. The pair’s take is luscious and loved up, with ear-pleasing melodic elements and Tyson’s fine vocal rising above a seriously squelchy bassline. In contrast, Max Essa’s dub mix is positively skeletal, with the Tokyo-based Balearic specialist slowly building up a warming, loved-up workout. An additional full vocal mix from Essa features as a bonus track on the digital edition of the single, alongside Robinson’s own radio edit.

The release of ‘Kete’ comes accompanied by a beautiful, stylish video. This was shot in Berlin, directed by photographer and video maker Roberto Zanrossa and art directed by the song’s singer, Joy Tyson with background visuals from Kubma Dobrowolski.

‘Kete’, then, is a single that sets the agenda for the Tigerbalm releases to follow, both musically and visually. It’s a strong sonic sentiment from a producer hitting her artistic peak

Zhivago was the sorcerer amongst this sacred land, his word was golden to all that heard it spoken. He meant more to the people of this town than any who had come before and any who might attempt to follow in his blessed footsteps. In the power of his wise, aged voice he was able to manipulate those around him to dance like they had never danced before. He carried the magic disco touch in his spoken word as the crowds of dancers circled him singing his name, praising him to the high heavens. "Zhivago, Zhivago" they cried out loud. The whole world would hear them sing soon.

It was May 2017 when Earthboogie’s debut release dropped on Leng. The soundsystem-loving East London duo rightly won praise for a fine EP that brilliantly joined the dots between all things intergalactic, terrestrial and tribal. 

Having spent the last ten months recording their adventures, Izaak Gray and Nicola Robinson return with “Silken Moon”, the first single from their forthcoming debut album, Human Call. 

In typical fashion, “Silken Moon” cannily combines musical elements from a myriad of styles – most notably Afro-disco, samba and mid-tempo Chicago house – to create a humid hybrid that defies easy categorization. There are bouncy organ riffs, undulating acid lines, clipped Afro-funk guitars, tons of tropical percussion and the chanted, carnival-friendly vocalizations of guest singer Nina Miranda. 

The release comes backed with remixes from two members of the extended Leng family: long-serving producer Felix Dickinson and Turkish rising star Ali Kuru. Dickinson sticks close to the original of “Silken Moon” with a mix built around gently jacking machine drums and Earthboogie’s sweaty guitar licks while Kuru takes “Human Call” in an altogether more cosmic direction. Pushing the track’s psychedelic TB-303 lines and tropical textures to the fore whilst adding his own mind-altering electronics – most notably a fat new synth bassline – Kuru cleverly re-casts the track as a pulsating, late night throb-job.

Who are Fred und Luna?
"Fred und Luna" are two mannequins living in a fashion boutique in Karlsruhe, Germany. They serve as muse for musician, lector, poet and photo/video maker Rainer Buchmüller.
Inspired by his doll friends and his love for German electronic music of the past decades, Rainer Buchmüller under the alias “Fred und Luna” produces his self-created genres Elektrokraut and Krautelektro: both a modern combination of repetitive rhythms, beautiful melodies, electronic soundscapes and elements from the Krautrock era.
Under the name of “Ariston Baton” Rainer Buchmüller also writes and performs sound poems and concrete poetry. On live events and especially on exhibitions Ariston Baton is joining “Fred und Luna” and Rainer Buchmüller’s third identity “Vizudaru Nono”, who is contributing video and photo projections. Together they form the so called “Equipe Nadaphysique”. The next exhibition featuring all three named personalities will take place end of October 2018 at Rockomotives Festival, Vendôme/France.

A brief history of Fred und Luna
Having previously released the EP “Glück auf” on the Scottish label Optimo Music and being remixed by Prins Thomas for the Berlin label Innervisions, the year 2017 saw Fred und Luna feature their debut album “Im Klanggarten” on Frank Wiedemann’s (Âme, Howling) newly-founded label Bigamo Musik.

After the first editions of both the EP and LP being sold out quickly, live shows in Germany, France and England followed as well as remixes for Peter Pardeike (Connaisseur Recordings) and a common release with Trikk on Innervisions, among others.
A team-up with Achim Treu (UFO Hawaii) resulted in several remixes for international musicians.
