Strapontin and Zillas On Acid are back with a second red hot collaborative EP. Let them tell you all about it….

After completing Acid Straps Vol. I, we knew we had to delve ever deeper into the shared Strapontin-Zillas (Strapozillas?) universe–harder, weirder, wilder. Work commenced as before, with music volleyed across the Atlantic via the information superhighway. Particular yet universal themes emerged with “Dial Up” (modern [mis]communication), “Another Job” (the perils of labor), “Reading Comments” (distraction and the social mediated life), and “In Your Mind” (quick fix platitudes via the self-help industrial complex). 

A chance planetary alignment brought the three of us together IRL in Brussels this past summer to put the finishing touches on the EP while we were all incarnated–TOGETHER–in the same physical space. It’s this raw PHYSICALITY that informs the more focused final release, which we hope will translate to you, the listener, as you carefully experience… Acid Straps Vol. II.

Down The Hatch is given an 80s electrofunk “boogie dub” treatment, thanks to bubbling analog synths and old school drum machines. It is a catchy and funky exercise in less is more production.

Based in Nancy, Brasserie de Clémery draws its inspiration from both German brewing traditions and the organoleptic revolution of the craft brewing movement. All their beers are brewed and produced on site, with an emphasis on human scale, quality and short supply chains. They see tradition as a fundamental foundation, and experimentation as a necessary pleasure. And it works: in April 2023, one of their beers was named best beer in the world

We’re happy to cordially invite you to the Regression Session, hosted by eternal Philadelphia scene flag bearers @zillasonacid ! And if you think this sounds awfully lot like a scam, you’re probably right: „Regression Session“ is just a front of their illegal black market operation, trading raw uncut gems on a large scale. Just listen to the opener and title track and you won’t exactly have a strong case for the Zillas selling out, but rough as it is, this thing is capable of destroying any dancefloor it touches. Looking at their recent releases it’s fair to say the Z’s are on quite a run, putting out music on labels like Permanent Vacation, Throne Of Blood, Multi Culti or Ivan Smagghe’s Disques de la Mort. Tunes like the sneaky rough slow burners „Underling“ or „Start Digging“ sound like they could be lifted from the latter’s infamous DJ sets, while the deceptively titled „Cha Cha Cha“ or closer „Casual Observer“ justify the „Acid“ in the artist name. „Shining Snakes Across The Lake“ is what some years might have been called a mid-tempo house roller and probably counts as downtempo these days. Speaking of tempos, the penultimate „Sweet Days Of Discipline“ starts of masquerading as reaaally downtempo, but ends up throwing 155bpm kick drums at you, so better watch out, all you k-hole ravers! Let’s not forget to talk about „bquiet“, which is what you’d call mid-tempo house these days (125bpm) and uses the eternally banging combination of a jacking beat, a polyrhythmic bass line, some lead-synth stabs and talking vocal slices. You can practically smell the sweat. So what’s left to say? What you see is what you get: They are Zillas, and they are on Acid. And they provide a collection of eight tunes that probably each don’t necessarily have a double-digit amount of tracks in their DAW projects, and that’s exactly what makes them so forceful. Everyone's favourite trans-national non-denominational dance imprint joins forces with the dark lords of CALYPSO - the ever prolific Mexican Inigo Vontier and his Argentinian cohort Thomass Jackson. 

Few producers are hitting the nail on the head of the zeitgeist with quite as much impact as these two, and their label has crystallized their sound. Frequently play-listed by the likes of Red Axes, DJ Tennis, Chloé and more, Calypso have found a niche for their hard-hitting, voodoo-licious tracks.

Inigo drops fierce power-chug that will melt minds at peak-time moments at Mayan Warrior or MN Roy, Mr. Jackson turns in eminently playable mid-tempo grooves sure to fit in to the early and late hours in all kinds of sets.

Latin American outlet Calypso Records continues its city-focussed compilation series with a new instalment that places the focus on Ecuador capital Quito, with contributions from Nicola Cruz, FE, Quisxosis and NTFL.

Thomass Jackson and Iñigo Vontier’s Calypso Records imprint has been going from strength to strength with every release and following a compilation dedicated to Tel Aviv, they now look to give a platform to Quito based artists. Local talent Nicola Cruz helped assemble the tracks and says, "from the highlands of the equator, an eclectic sound develops in multiple forms: tension, drums and sounds from old records are retranslated to tape to revive emotions. All the tracks in this compilation have been assembled through different experimental methods, as this is something that characterises our creative process around here."

Cruz begins with with 'Tu Recuerdo', a brilliantly unhinged house track riddled with malfunctioning bleeps and beeps. Churning bass and rickety percussion all add to this wonky and most characterful groove.
