A good place to start

This is a music from a 'scratch' performance of 'Century' - a multimedia theatrical/music piece that follows one family's journey through the 20th century and beyond, focusing on the moments in time when their lives intersect with the defining global events of the time. Philosophically it is about loss, and empire.

'Waiting' is about two brothers squatting side by side in a trench on the first day of the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

'Piano for Sale' is about the early 80s recession

'Ms.Gemini' is a love song from a father to a daughter in the 30s; the father has joined Oswald Mosley's Union of British Fascists.

'Gordon's Gold' is about a treasure hunt my grandfather pursued all his life to try and trace a familu link to General Charles Gordon of Khartoum, and track down his legendary hidden gold. I set it in 1927 - the year my father was born, as I think my grandfather saw the gold as a crazy way to get financial security for the family in hard times.

Piano for Sale

Ed Haydon's beautiful piano piece "Hope" was one of my absolute favourite pieces from the Piano Cloud group in 2013. So when we launched a new challenge to record a cover version of another member's music, it was an obvious and immediate choice. 

Rather than simply reproduce the piece in the same way that Ed himself recorded it, I have used his notation as a start point and made some subtle changes. I have added extensions to the chords and re-voiced them, embellished the melody in places and added additional runs and doodles. There's a new ending too. These changes give the piece an "Andrew Eales flavour", while staying true, I hope, to Ed's original vision for the piece.

One of the reasons Ed Haydon's "Hope" was such a great track was its simplicity though, and I realise that by adding complexity I have created a version which is distinct. You may in any case prefer the original, which I encourage you to listen to here:
