Nick V @nickv was born in Manchester but for the last three decades has been an integral part of the scene in Paris. His La Mona events, which he talks about elsewhere in this issue, are a dance culture party running since 2008 and "exploring the relationship between dance and electronic music," which "often sees dance enthusiasts sharing the floor with house music heads. La Mona has "long celebrated the LGBTQ scene, catering for the Parisian community and encouraging alternative dances such as Vogueing, Waacking and many more which were birthed out of the early disco and house scene in the US."

As a DJ, record collector, audiophile and crate digger, Nick V's sound traverses through disco, deep techno, broken beat, boogie and dancefloor jazz while keeping house music at the core of everything. This cover mix for 5 Mag Issue 214 is the perfect encapsulation of that.

This time we have Dj Nadz out of Manchester (UK), here's what she has to tell about herself and her journey with House Music. 

Bio:
I'm Dj Nadz, Female Dj from Manchester uk born and bred. I love my music! From different genres of house music to soul, funky, motown, Afrobeat and many more.
I fell in love with house music in my 20's when I would listen to my friends dj and going to a bars and clubs.  I used to go to a small club called out in the sticks and it was very underground house music. From there I was hooked. 
 For many years I was a bedroom dj. But after Covid lockdown, I decided to get out there and show what I can do and share my passion and love for music.
Since that time, I have become one quarter of a dj group named Resonate. I play alongside 3 amazing Djs, Semaj, Neil Matthews and Dj Boba. We’ve played from a small local underground basement bar to Manchester bar’s and soon a clubs in the city of Manchester.  Our aim is to bring good quality deep, vocal, jazzy, jackin house music to Manchester. 
 I also have a Friday 5-6pm GMT radio slot on www.realhouseradio.com (Friday 5-6pm GMT)
I love playing live and on the radio show. I have been lucky in the people I have met along the way that I can call true friends and amazing dj’s and producers. I have gained more skills and knowledge around djing and the music industry. I am enjoying the journey and looking forward to what’s to come. I’m here for the musical ride and enjoying every minute.

Homemade House 23 - Nadz

On this episode of our Select series, we have Cairo’s Adham Zahran, one of the breakthrough producers in Egypt’s underground music scene, recognized for his other alias Relic & Rarity. Having been releasing music on vinyl and digital with various international labels over the last decade, Zharan is one of those artists you should keep on your radar. 

For his Select set, Adham Zahran crafts a deep house mix, peppered with warm grooves and various analogue sounds, featuring eclectic tunes by the likes of Green Sequence, Space Ghost and Steven Jullian & Kyle Hall.

I’m so thrilled to be able to share a segment pulled from a recent live recording mix in London at the infamous Little Portland club. 
Moreso because these are records I rarely get to play out so much in recent years. But they have found a home to shine at one of London’s best kept secret venues. 

It made sense to split the mix in parts because these days, who really has the attention span to listen through a continuous 5-6 hour set…?

The Jay Tripwire Tribute Project was an idea from a dear friend of mine. This all Vinyl mix is the first in a series dedicated to an extremely talented musician, and his long career of making great music. Many of his releases are ahead of their time. Every track in this series is a Jay original or remix. Releases under his aliases Mr. Barcode and Tyrone Latrelle, his 8-channels releases, as well as tracks on his own Tonality label will be featured on the project.

I've been active on the music scene for many years. So it's a natural progression to continue taking things forward…Bringing all of my experiences and ideas to the mix., creating and pushing forward a new joint project. Bringing live performances, along with DJ’s digging into their creates, and putting together a blended collection of their fav’s. Both of which build on previous radio shows & events I was involved with, alongside Julian Zizko, (known as Meme), where we developed a decent reputation for bringing quality events and parties, including those held at ‘Moog’, ‘The Bodega’, ‘Suede Bar’ and ‘The Angel’, along with a very successful Hockley Hustle event.

I have also collaborated & come together with the BigFaces (Jodie Parker & Coxie), on a highly reputed party at The Bohunk Institute.  An event which honoured the Music Exchange. (A record shop, now gone from these parts, but not from our hearts). Then further events with them at Bar Eleven, Rough Trade and the I-Club.
Before all this began though, my story starts in the mid 90’s with Quadrant Sound System. ‘Quadrant’ was born out of good friends who shared a love for music, especially all things electronic. This led to wonderful collaborations and experiences, alongside opportunities to play at many various events across England and Europe, either with Quadrant or as a guest DJ. Appearing alongside; Chris Duckenfield, Dave Clarke, Luke Solomon, Charles Webster, Schmoov, Ralph Lawson, and Pepe Braddock, among others. I’ve also had the privilege to spin tunes at Smokescreen and DiY parties too.

All of which brought together a decision to explore music further. Enough so, that I decided to start putting out my own productions, either through ‘Connect for Music’ (a label he set up himself), or released through other projects. You’ll more likely find me under my aliases, ‘Joseki’ & ‘i-level’. Collaborations with Damien Bailey (Babble/Special Interest), have brought some well received releases too, on American label ‘Tango’, and more recently on Andy Riley and Simon ‘Da Sunlounge’ Newby’s label, ‘Borrowed’. One that obtained a lot of support from various DJs globally.  There has also been a release with Ben Leary, called ‘Siris’, was also well supported and played out by Richie Hawtin & Marco Corola, plus a track with Mark PF, which appeared on BBC Radio & Radio 1 extra. Which pretty much ties all the story together and into this present moment
