I wrote this after seeing an elderly lady in a cafe, sitting alone by the window gazing out across the sea. She made her cup of tea last the entire time and was still there when I left. 

She seemed so lonely and lost in her thoughts, will we all end up the same?

DRIFTING SAND

I greet each day in the very same way
Live my life without a plan
Tend to go where the winds may blow
Move along like drifting sand

Different motel, different kind of hell
But it always seems the same 
Similar places, familiar faces
All that changes is the name

In every bar, movie stars
Working just to pay the rent
Same old tune, one day soon
We'll all see they're heaven sent 

Green lights on the highway 
Telling me it’s time to go
Been on the road for so long 
Have to keep on moving on

Bar tabs, taxi cabs
No cash, no cards, pay tomorrow
Cold empty room, I'll be heading off soon
Nowhere left to borrow 

Late at night, candlelight 
No money, no food, no surprise 
Life in a suitcase, tying my shoelace
Close the door no goodbyes

Hiding my face, loading my case
Collar pulled up against the rain
I drive early morn long before dawn 
The car is my home once again

In my pocket, in an empty wallet  
A faded photo, a faded memory
In case I forget my one regret

Lying on the floor
Broken mirror
She can’t take this anymore 
 
Shattered 
Into a thousand pieces 
Scattered 
Blown to the four winds
 
Bad thoughts 
Always seem to stay
Take all these demons
And make them go away
 
Please 
Tread carefully 
Don’t trample
On this broken mirror

Each and every day

Never has she felt so low
As she does today
All the clouds

Darkness is her best friend
