Believe it or not, this is a single guitar run through a bizarre effects unit called the Fritz Granular Engine. I overdubbed some flutes to give it a counterpoint but apart from that it's a single track and a single take. It sounds like there are horns in it at 1:33 and I've no idea why - I must have hit a harmonic by mistake and I haven't been able to repeat it.

It's named after a slogan on an anti-fracking t-shirt, which itself came from a comment by a tory politician.

Inspired by the Pixies track 'Break My Body' an early version of which on the 'Boston Broadcast' sounds even more haunting stripped of the drums & bass. This song is me finding out how heavy / disturbing I could make a song without drums / bass.

As it wears its influences so obviously on its sleeve I've referenced various flavours of American alt-rock in the lyrics - the song 'Mutilated Lips' by Ween for example.

This one had a long gestation. Originally written as an attempt to use loads of VST instruments that I've accumulated but hadn't previously used. I gave the instrumental the working title 'Maclunkey' as the drums are sort of clunky. That then provided the jumping off point for a diatribe about Star Wars - loooool!

My attempt at an out and out pop song. Not 100% happy with the vocal (first 2 lines of the first verse have flat notes in them) but it warms up I reckon.

Flatliner

Started this more years ago than I care to count - finally finished it during my week off.
There are a lot of remix stems (isolated vocals / guitars from famous songs) kicking about online. I decided to remix this particular track as it's got a peculiar twisted quality to the melody & I wanted to see if I could recreate that on an electronic version.
The isolated vocal and guitar come from the MTV Unplugged session from 1991 but the rest I've put together on Reason 10.

Walk On Brother

Bowie rearranged and updated several of his songs over the years, including this one. Seeing as the isolated vocal was available online I thought I'd have a go.
I tried to bear in mind that Bowie was often experimental and pushed the limits of what constituted popular music so I've made this deliberately sonically weird in places - such as with the distorted guitar part that I messed up with the type of filters usually used for dance music breakdowns.
Only the vocal and a few bits of the guitar part are retained from the original song, everything else was created in Reason.

They say you have to learn the rules before you can break them. This is me learning the rules by playing some proper blues - specifically slide blues through overdrive White Stripes style. I've tried to update the sound a little with some synth and chopped up, beat synced harmonica.

Bleed For Me

Put together for the 'How To Begin' workshop. I've always fancied making a completely atonal composition entirely using sampled sounds but arranging it like a conventional piece of music. Inspired by John Cage, The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and The Art of Noise who heard all sound as music.
