2003:  Through an odd stroke of fate, professional musician Rick Smith put down his trusty saxophone for awhile and concentrated his free time on learning a touch of piano.  After some time shedding the new medium he began creating beautiful, sensitive songs, and he proudly brought his melodies to audiences at open mic nights around Detroit. Despite the fact that Rick had poured his heart and soul into the music, his performances seemed to leave a very indifferent attitude on the faces of the people he was crooning.  Partially because he sucked and partially because it's been done before.

And then something happened...

One sunny day in 2003 Rick was hunched over his Fender Rhodes electric piano. He asked the lovely young lady who was hanging around at the time for a song topic. She sarcastically replied with "sex".  After asking her for one more topic to make things a big more interesting, Rick penned what was to become one of the greatest hits of the decade, "Sex & Blowjobs".

Rick Becomes Charming

Still attempting to perform his legit songs around town, Rick occasionally would slip in his stupid little "Sex & Blowjobs" song to people bored by his originals. After witnessing that he could actually get some kind of a response out of people with stupid, tasteless lyrics, Rick decided it was time to change his musical path drastically.

Tainted by the songs of Adam Sandler, Red Peters, Weird Al, Frank Zappa and intelligent comedy of Dice Clay, Rick seemed to have come full-circle back to the roots of his teenage days. Engaging himself in a flurry of filthy original songwriting, Rick at one point recited the lyrics to one of his newest creations, "My Favorite Grave", to a girl that he was dating. When she replied with "That's Charming, Rick", Rick knew he had found a stage name that would suit the project to perfection.

The project progresses 2004-2008

Much like skinning dogs or Wesley Willis, odd beliefs tend to attract odd audiences. Between hosting an open mic for over a year at Cupacino (RIP), numerous open mic performances at Trixie's in Roseville and Che Cosa in Mt. Clemens, and releasing four award-winning albums, Charming's little-project-that-could has gained steam and a cult of retardedly-devoted followers.

2009

In 2009 Rick began learning the art of dueling pianos and began spending his time learning bad pop songs instead of writing filthy originals.  The project took a hiatus until 2011 when Rick decided to record and release his final batch of songs.  "The Sensual Side" has sold over twelve copies and can be purchased on iTunes and various other online retailers.

2013

After ten years from "Sex and Blowjobs" to the end, Rick officially retired the comedy music project when he moved to Germany to reside with his wife.  Rick still plans to make an occasional appearance at open mics when he is in town visiting, however, and maybe even play a few of his classic works just one more time.  He can't help smiling when the jaws "Hit The Floor."
