Shivara Flute Meditation

The intention of the album is combine a cross section of musical art and meditative practice. Music, Sound and Frequency have a direct impact on our nervous system and can also be great teachers to bring us back home to a calm and centered place in the nervous system. 

The rhythmic based tracks, can also be used as breath practices. For example, the listener, could inhale for a count of 4 and exhale for a count of 6. This type of practice can help begin to move our nervous system to a place of relaxation and calm. By slowing the breaths per minute, and extending the exhale the practitioner is also sending a signal to the nervous system to begin to relax and release. If you aren't able to find the beat by the rhythm, simply watch the "second" hand for the count. (1 beat per second) Of course you can also simply enjoy the sounds! 

Instruments on the album include Guitars, Charango, Native American and Bamboo Flutes, as well as Crystal and Himalayan Singing Bowls. Jeannine Scarpino is the guest vocalist on the opening track (a yoga teacher), who I was grateful to have met after a chance meeting and opportunity to accompany her yoga class. A Prayer for Liberation is a deeply meditative track for yoga, meditation, healing and massage. It is based on the ancient Sanskrit Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, the recital of which is said to help overcome any obstacles we may need to face.

Inspiration for this collaboration between singer/multi-instrumentalist Praful, singer Dana Devi and co-producer Vimal Gabrielsen was the much-loved meditation piece ‘A Prayer for Healing’, which was released back in 2017 on the album Silence Speaks. With A Prayer for Liberation we are bringing a sequel, with special guest Zhubin Kalhor from Iran on kamanche.

Shakti Guitar is the continuation of a musical journey that began many years ago when Stevin McNamara first fell in love with North Indian classical music. Having grown up in South Africa, surrounded by African sounds and rhythms and imported music from the USA and Europe in the forms of jazz, blues and rock, he was unprepared for the stunning effect on first hearing Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan and Nikhil Banerjee, to name a few. The result was an ever-growing passion for North Indian classical music that became even more real as he was fortunate to study sitar with Ram Das Chakravarty of Benares.

As the years have gone by, all this music has grown into a personal style that encompasses all these influences and is now presented on the nylon string guitar. It is important to note that the music on this album is not classical North Indian music, but rather a personal style that has developed through a deep immersion in that centuries-old tradition.
