Good Enough

Recorded in early 2009, this is an original song from my solo project "The Right Words".

Musically this song had a lot of influence from the Cure, particularly the deep bass-like riffs in "Pictures Of You" and the explosive synth in "Plainsong", as well as the newer "Underneath The Stars".

The "I Said, She Said" lyrics were also inspired by "Plainsong" as it just felt right given the musical sound.

The Right Words - The Key

Recorded around June 2009, this is an original song from my solo project "The Right Words".

Musically, I tried to do something a bit different to my other songs, less delay and more of a straight lead part, played simultaneously on Electric and Acoustic, giving a bit of shimmer.

Vocally I drew from a few different places, but the bridge/breakdown was very Bowie influenced, particularly by the song "Within You" from the film "Labyrinth". I'm just a sucker for theatrics in music, I guess!

The Right Words - The Girl From Tomorrow

Recorded early 2010, this is an original song from my solo project "The Right Words".

This is one of my favourite tracks I've made, mainly due to the heavy, noisy bridge that has so much stuff going on in it. I've had quieter, more structured breakdowns in most of my songs, but here I felt it needed to be "dirtier" to keep with the lyrical theme.

The Right Words - Yours To Break

Recorded around July 2007, this is an original song from my solo project "The Right Words".

The call-and-response vocals are a result of the song being written with two vocalists in mind, but I ended up doing both parts myself. Who knows, I might re-do this sometime!

This was one of the first original songs I recorded in this style, after Not Alone, but I still enjoy the layered guitars and the breakdown more than a lot of my other compositions.

Poison Heart

My good friend (and bandmate when performing The Right Words songs live) Luke Blackburn and I did a four-song Open Mic set at the Mars Hill Café, Parramatta NSW a few weeks back, marking the end of an approximately 3 year long hiatus from performing together.

This set was recorded on an iPhone 4, and a couple of the songs have the openings cut off... but being our slightly rusty return to the stage after a long hiatus, here it is in full for the citizens of the internet!

Live Acoustic Set at Mars Hill Café

I started work on this track in February of this year, and sidelined it until the pieces fell into place.

With somewhat Middle Eastern inspired guitar licks, and lyrics about working the daily grind to keep your head above water, I guess this song is what happens after seeing Roger Waters' "The Wall" & System of a Down live within a few weeks of one another!

This is one of the first songs I recorded, many moons ago! A cover of "Lullaby" by The Cure.

Lullaby (~2008)

The Right Words is a musical project started in 2006, with an aim to blend all of my influences into a sound that reflects who I am and what I believe in.

With influences drawn from David Bowie, The Cure, Pink Floyd, and other Prog Rock, Punk, Post-Punk and New Wave artists, including The Ramones, NOFX, even Blink-182, I hope that I can reach others with my music and touch their lives in the same way these artists have mine.
