In this installment of Sound Advice, we speak to Hugo Gruzman of Flight Facilities. The Australian pair landed 15 years ago with “Crave You,” a luscious slice of disco pop. Today, they're playing Glastonbury and Coachella and rocking clubs from Ibiza to Bali; known for their infectious house productions, epic mixes and edits of everyone from Jamiroquai to Cassius. In this exclusive interview, we talk to Hugo about the duo’s beginnings in the bloghouse scene, and how it influences their work today. We also talk about curation, music discovery and fan interaction on SoundCloud, and their approach to remixing and arrangement.

5 Hour Decades Set | Live From Sydney

From the opening lines of debut single “Fall Falls,” it is clear Rikavista has firmly staked its claim on the evolving modern-rock landscape. The band traffics in songcraft that is at once romantic, hopeful and fun – all with its own unique melodic stamp. It is music with a sophistication that belies the Austin-based band’s relative youth.

“We all grew up jamming together as best friends in Austin, Texas,” says lead singer/rhythm guitarist/pianist Jake Holcomb. “In 2011 we decided to start recording and gigging.”

Rounded out by Steven Buehler (bass, backing vocals), Matthew Ostrander (lead guitar), and Andrew Beach (drums/percussion, backing vocals), Rikavista’s music elicits the propulsive and meditative work of such bands as Coldplay, The Black Keys, and Death Cab for Cutie. Holcomb and his bandmates’ efforts have led to impressive opportunities in a short amount of time, including multiple appearances at SXSW and an opening slot for Sounds Under Radio at Austin’s legendary Stubb’s Amphitheater. 

Perhaps even more important to Rikavista has been its commitment to community service. To that end, the band frequently lends its talents in support of Central Texas charity events. And in 2013, the band founded Bands Serving Bands, a movement dedicated to enabling local musicians to better support each other. 

“We want artists to build each other up, whether it’s just showing up to a gig, helping a band load in and load out for nothing in return, and advertising their music alongside our own,” says Holcomb. “Just serving. No strings attached.”

With its collective hands fully immersed in charitable work and an EP slated for late-2013 release, Rikavista stands poised to take its music – and its message of artistic support – beyond the Austin city limits.
