Missin Me

This is a song I wrote for a woman I met after Vida broke up with me. She was a really cool Tom Boy kinda gal who fronted a Bluegrass band when I was playing with the Meegans. We had music in common plus we knew a few of the same people in the puddle which was the Austin Music Scene...back in the 90's. We had a lot of laughs and became friends. One day she invited me over to her house to play some music and we played a bunch of old country songs. Then we played some CSNY and Neil Young. I remember her like it was yesterday. She was wearing an unbuttoned blue flannel shirt'n a wife beater underneath, Levis, and her silky long auburn hair cascading down over her shoulders. When we sang those harmonies together we were so spot on, so in tune, I fell in love with her right then and there in that moment. Frozen in time! Sometimes I think about her, that moment, that afternoon, and what Janis Joplin said at Woodstock, "If you get a chance to love someone for one day....you better make that day your life man!" Yea, not long after that Jo went on tour with her band and we lost touch. Never saw or heard from her ever again, but she gave me this song and I'll always be grateful that she touched my life...and my heart.

Yellowbirds is the moniker for the latest musical exploits of Sam Cohen—guitarist/songwriter/vocalist in the psychedelic collective Apollo Sunshine.  Cohen grew up in Houston, Texas, and while the Texas of his teens may have been home to Big Oil, Enron, the Bush family, and the drab grey Astros jerseys of the 90s, he prefers to think of it as the Texas of yore, home to: Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, the Space Program, and rainbow orange Astros jerseys.  It stands to reason, then, that his current home of New York City must be the mythical Empire City: Rocky Mountains of architecture, epicenter of modern art, home to Charles Mingus and The Velvet Underground.  

It was with these timeless inspirations in mind that Cohen created Yellowbirds’ The Color. Double-speed auto-harp glissandos, glowing backwards pedal-steel, bubbling echo and fuzz guitars coalesce into a warm wall of sound.  As existential lyrical themes emerge, delivered nonchalantly over psyched-out aural landscapes, the picture emerges of a dust-blown, 4th dimensional Future West.  This is Cohen's quixotic world where "only the purist tones can be heard."

The Rest Of My Life

Rikki Todd, whose given name is Richard Todd Kearsley, is a singer songwriter from Austin, Texas. All songs were written, produced, and sung by Rikki Todd. RT plays acoustic GTR on all songs. David Grissom handles all electric Guitars, except on "One More Minute" where he shares GTR duties with Sam Cohen. David also plays acoustic GTR on "One More Minute". Bukka Allen plays all keyboards, except piano which is handled by Floyd Domino. Howard Kalish plays all fiddles and shares Mandolin duties with John Miller("I'll be around") and RT("Missin Me"). Pedal Steel is handled by Bob Hoffnar for the most part, except on "One More Minute" and "Vida" which were played by Sam Cohen. Drummer Lisa Pankratz and her bassist husband Brad Fordham keep everybody in line with their precision timing on all songs except "One More Minute", "Judy Rose", "Missin Me", "I'll be around", and "Vida" whose grooves were regulated by Dan Swift on drums and John Miller on bass.
