Skee Mask is one of dance music's greatest crossover stories of the past decade, with new albums greeted with the attention usually reserved for an Aphex Twin or a Caribou. ("Loved seeing this on r/indieheads," said one Reddit user, on the release of the 2021 LP Pool.) It's not hard to understand why: albums like Compro, he blends well-worn dance music tropes with incredible, detailed soundscapes and spine-tingling melodies. And on his 12-inches, he brings that sensibility to the dance floor, with an approach probably best described as articulate. Even on his most ambient of tracks, everything is in its right place. Along with founders the Zenker Brothers, his music outlines everything that makes Munich outfit Ilian Tape one of the best techno labels going.

On the decks, it's kind of a different story. It might surprise you if you only know his albums, but Skee Mask is an incredible DJ, balancing his predilection for hip-hop and UK-informed sounds with laser-focused techno. He can adapt to all sorts of situations—there's an incredible recording of him DJing with four of the best grime and drum & bass MCs in the business—and on his RA Podcast he focuses on the techno side of things, with nearly two hours of pacey techno and creative mixing, with dips into acid, electro, garage and more. It's a party-starting mix from a genuine star, perfect for getting through the holiday doldrums or pre-gaming your NYE plans. Like Skee Mask's best records, it's something to enjoy in any number of settings.

This year, be it manic and beautiful, is coming to a rapid close. Here is our final offering to you. A parting gift, a final kiss on the cheek, one last pat on the back, a long winded arms wide open, heartbeat to heartbeat hug.

This journey into gentle reflection comes courtesy of Quincy Raw. Zach is a steaming pile of raw Meanjin talent, brains and warmth. He spreads his genius throughout many audible aspects; from a gifted selector, producer, dance floor director and part creator of local label @pocketmoth . It’s quite evident that Zach puts in nothing but hard work and devotion into all that he does and the community that surrounds. 

Notes from Zach:
Sounds of inner city pressure met with thoughts of outer city space. confusion, contentment, alone-ness, tension, love, togetherness, understanding. This is my hug.

Based in Brighton/ UK, Caldera is an artist we have been following and whose records we have been collecting for many years now. Having released on such labels as Noorden, Silva Electronics, WWMF, WNCL, Bokhari and most recently Kimochi, his productions span across many genres from ambient to broken beat, deep house and techno.

He's had a busy last couple of months, including a stellar contribution to a great fundraiser on Vief records along with a slew of high profile shows. While we've all had the pleasure of having many a darnce throughout the various spots in the city he's played, this one allows us to keep the rollers going wherever we find ourselves.

D E E P E R   L I F E - Rikki Newton

With over two decades of DJing and industry experience behind him, Rikki Newton’s dedication to music is readily displayed through his dexterous and versatile sets, as well as his involvement in the Brisbane scene as a promoter running events like Andromeda Festival, the now defunct Subtrakt and his most recent project, inner_circle. 

Cutting his teeth at Family Nightclub’s notorious Uncle between 2004-2009, Rikki gained a well-deserved reputation as a go-to warm up DJ for the duration of his five year long residency. These formative years played a key role in him honing in on his sound and perfecting his craft.

Not content with simply presenting his own sound to a growingly eager Brisbane audience, Rikki harnessed the momentum building in the local scene and poured it into his own brand, Subtrakt. Since its inception in 2007, Subtrakt played host to the likes of Kenny Larkin, Fred P, Steffi, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Move D, Smallpeople Claire Morgan and Jane Fitz to name a few. After 10 years it was time to move onto something new and thus, Inner_Circle was born alongside good friend Leighton James.

Now in it's 5th year, inner_circle continue's to present diverse line-ups, including revered internationals alongside solid local and interstate guests. Inner_Circle has welcomed the likes of DjRUM, Martyn, Claire Morgan, Moopie, Perko, Kate Miller, Andy Garvey, Escape Artist, Cousin and Pugilist to it's stages.

Staying true to what he loves and armed with a constantly updated record collection, Rikki remains an integral player in his local circuit and beyond.
