A song cycle in eight parts, "Coldwell Clough" follows a day-long hike from Castleton to Hayfield, landmark by landmark over Kinder Scout - the heart of the Dark Peak, in England's Peak District. Steeped in the local folklore and history of the area, each part of "Coldwell Clough" explores a different aspect of the link between creativity and death, and how these links are shaped by our sense of our own identity. At its heart is one question - how does where we're from shape our stories about who we are? 

Coldwell Clough itself is a steep valley on the west face of Kinder, just up the road from where Ringlefinch singer Andy grew up. He walked the dogs there most days and used to spend hours sitting at the head of the valley, watching life move slowly on in the village of Hayfield below. For a small village, Hayfield has a truly impressive number of ancient ghost stories - from the Boggart of Highgate Hall to the Hayfield Witch - but Coldwell Clough also has an important place in more recent history. 

In 1932, hundreds of ramblers defied landowners, gamekeepers and police by hiking over Kinder in what became known as the Mass Trespass. This act of civil disobedience ultimately helped establish the right to roam across open land in England & Wales, and is celebrated by participant Ewan MacColl in his famous song "The Manchester Rambler". Andy was raised on stories of the Mass Trespass, of people taking to the moors for their belief that we all have a right to the wilderness. Coldwell Clough itself was part of their route, and "Coldwell Clough" is also a tribute to their courage.

"Pomme De Lune"
Growing up in the Peak District in England, miles from the ocean, made Ringlefinch singer Andy a bit jealous of all the great shanties that coastal folks seemed to have. Derbyshire folk songs are grand and lovely, and have a sensibility all their own, but “Lowlands Away”? “Roll Alabama”? “Running Down To Cuba”? Anthems, one and all! Taking cues from Baron Munchausen to “Yellow Submarine”, "Pomme De Lune" is our stab at writing a shanty for the Pennines - an anti-sea-shanty, if you will.

"The Masochism Tango"
Talented pianist - a gifted singer with superbly deft comic timing and a line in dark humour - respected lecturer in mathematics at Harvard University - Tom Lehrer is also one of the great satirical songwriters of the twentieth century. One of his earlier songs, "The Masochism Tango" scandalised audiences on its release in the late 1950s. How times have changed.

"Woolpacks"
The Woolpacks are a scattered group of gritstone boulders standing on the flank of Kinder Scout in the Peak District. Shaped by the winds over many thousands of years into peculiar, otherworldly shapes, they stand tall and silent high above the valleys - but there’s a playfulness to them as well, somehow. This tune foreshadows “Coldwell Clough” both musically and thematically.

"Tongue In Cheek"
What would happen if a lizard’s tail kept growing when it fell off? If it grew a new lizard, how different would it be from the original? Taking inspiration from surrealist metaphysics, this song explores the heavy silence that follows saying something you immediately regret to a loved one. As the silence takes on a life of its own, so do your words, and meaning itself becomes something plastic, malleable, weird.

"The Prince Of Poyais"
In the early 1820s, Gregor MacGregor pulled off the biggest con in history. On his arrival in London back from a striking military career in Central America, he raised the equivalent of millions of pounds in investment in a small country on the Atlantic coast called Poyais. Poyais was fertile, MacGregor said, rich in natural resources and precious metals. Moreover, the inhabitants were so friendly that they not only wanted British colonists to come and live with them, but their king had appointed McGregor as “Cazique” of the country - a kind of prince. With plots of land bought, money raised and ships chartered, some 250 people set sail for their new home with everything they owned and with hopes high. It was only when they arrived weeks later that they learned the truth. Poyais didn’t exist, and the land they’d come to settle was barren and unliveable. Fully two thirds of the colonists perished.

An untraditional love song that explores identity, acceptance, and the profoundly macabre. Are we just the product of our experiences, and can we step outside that to decide who we want to be on our own terms? Edward Gorey was a 20th century writer and artist, and his beguilingly dark (frequently hilarious) illustrated books have been Ringlefinch favourites for many years.

We've all got a friend who's been there - this song is dedicated to a friend who took what didn't kill him, and used it to make himself stronger.

We've been wanting to do a Halloween EP for a little while now, so we decided to have a little fun with the B-Sides when putting out "Edward Gorey's Gory Stories" as the lead single from the album. Edward Gorey was a 20th century writer and artist, and his beguilingly dark illustrated books have been Ringlefinch faves for many years. We particularly love his work 'The Gashlycrumb Tinies', a delightfully morbid A-B-C book (or abecedary, word fans) whose protagonists get bumped off in rhyming couplets, and in hilariously unlikely ways. Special shout-out to artist Lolita Blaga for the artwork for the 'Gory Stories' EP, she absolutely nailed the Gorey style!

The first release from our long-awaited, self-produced album, we're very excited to share our new 'Gory Stories' EP! We've been wanting to do a Halloween EP for a little while now, so we decided to have a little fun with the B-Sides when putting out "Edward Gorey's Gory Stories" as the lead single from the album. The video for "Edward Gorey..." goes live on YouTube on 25th October as well - it's hilariously macabre (if we do say so ourselves), so do check it out (https://youtu.be/kz0AxmNdRPw)! 

"Edward Gorey's Gory Stories" is an untraditional love song that explores identity, acceptance, and the profoundly macabre. Are we just the product of our experiences, and can we step outside that to decide who we want to be on our own terms?

Edward Gorey was a 20th century writer and artist, and his beguilingly dark illustrated books have been Ringlefinch faves for many years. We particularly love his work 'The Gashlycrumb Tinies', a delightfully morbid A-B-C book (or abecedary, word fans) whose protagonists get bumped off in rhyming couplets, and in hilariously unlikely ways. Special shout-out to artist Lolita Blaga for the artwork for the 'Gory Stories' EP, she absolutely nailed the Gorey style!

Growing up in the Peak District in England, miles from the ocean, made us a bit jealous of all the great shanties that coastal folks seemed to have. Sure, Derbyshire folk songs are grand and lovely, but 'Lowlands Away'? 'Roll Alabama'? 'Running Down To Cuba'? Anthems!

Taking cues from 'Baron Munchausen' to 'Yellow Submarine', "Pomme De Lune" is our stab at writing a shanty for the Pennines - an anti-sea-shanty, if you will.

Recorded live on William's phone in our rehearsal room on Halloween 2019, this is our arrangement of the theme from the film 'Halloween' by John Carpenter. We absolutely LOVED playing this, as you can probably tell, and the next night we opened with this at our EP launch for the 'Gory Stories' EP at the Betsey Trotwood in London.
