On 13th November 2021, we landed and returned home once more: back in our rightful place of Dare To nightclub. Picture the scene (once more):

Super-sub DJ Boursin had stepped in last minute for COVID-fallen DJ Mooncup, pulsing his heavy as a house super subs through the main room, leaving no unaddressed club-cum-capitalist trauma untouched. Elena Colombi then slipped right on in, warping the UV paint on the walls to a new shade of weird. Her signature idiosyncratic chug, tampered with a charming yet chilling darkness, that on a slow and steady boil, tickled the room, tendon to toes. Then, N-R-G-FLASH, Oceanic rises from the waters...

Liquid fire licking and scolding; rigid and shifting steel structures. Pure BODY music. Bumping hard all the way through from hip to skull. The eclecticism of styles are held tight in a vice of lean and mean method and movement, slowly shifting shades in the blur of frenetic fray. 

Here is the sound of an artist who knows just when to lean into the lean grids of lights and when it's time to let go, lean back and let the music do the screaming. Also, that wiiiiiild midset tempo shifter? It's beauty in the madness and I'm so so damn happy he came through so hard.

He may be Dutch, but Oceanic's understanding of broken poly-riddims makes you wonder if he was born under the (continu-)Nuum-shaded moon. Damn, he even stressed how un-UK my "tech-house with colours of other" closing set was. And yeh coming from a performance like his, I had to take it tbh. Especially when he opened with a special dub comprised of voicenote I'd sent him. Big fucking lols. We love to see it.

GET LOOSE #4 -  Oceanic

It has always been a struggle to sum up the sounds of Zuli. The Egyptian sound artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist is restlessly creative and unconventional in what he does. He can do everything from rap, IDM, footwork to hardcore jungle and experimental rhythms, and mainly on Lee Gamble’s UIQ label. He's also done a lot for his native Cairo scene as co-founder of both the Kairo is Koming (KIK) and AHOMA collectives, and former co-head of the city's alternate music venue VENT which later turned into a club night and festival. He's now firmly established in the wider European scene, not least in part thanks to his excellent radio show on NTS. 

There is no messing around on this week's mix. It's a dystopian soundtrack that unites Arab music, Chicago club, European techno and UK bass. Every track fizzes with energy, prickly percussion or distorted drums. It's intricate yet heavy, dense yet atmospheric and the warped designs and contorted rhythms make an art form of physicality.

Hi there ~ I’m Jesse. I live in LA, run a label called Motion Ward, walk dogs, love food, make music with my friend John, DJ from time to time, and love my friends and family. Music is a way of developing emotional closeness with people for me :) 

Where did this gig take place?

This gig took place in Turin, which is in northern Italy right next to the Alps. The venue was a DIY space run by Misto Mame Collective and affiliates. About 9 people pay for the space to be able to operate monthly, and the feeling of community there is really strong and sweet. It was a highlight for me on this recent tour I did. Also really loved the people ❤️

What did you drink as you played?

I had one beer and water lol, and at the very end someone brought me a glass of red wine :) Was trying to minimize the amount I was drinking so I didn’t have to go pee, but eventually I had to loop a track and bolt to the bathroom :X (can you spot the moment?) 

Favorite moment in the mix?

Probably when it starts to escalate after the first few tracks ~ it reminds me of when the energy that night palpably shifted and felt like the dance floor was turning into an amoeba 🦠
