Both solo, and as the driving force behind Hercules & Love Affair - a project that scans as a love letter to classic house and disco - Andy Butler has been responsible for some of the best dance music of the 21st century. But as you will undoubtedly know, he's also a bloody talented DJ - from his teenage years playing underground leather nights in his native Denver, right through to the present day and being booked for pretty much every major club around the world.

Ahead of his appearance at fabric on 24th February - he's playing in Room One along with Bicep and Gideön - Andy has provided us with this most excellent Ransom Note mix. Classic sounds with fresh energy - a timeless combination.

Over the past 22 years I have been recording & adding to a mixtape series begun in 1998 in San Francisco. I started putting together selections from the deeper, “late night” end of my record collection that almost never made their way onto regular DJ mixtapes we were all making in the late nineties. Back in the day before Uber, all those after-hours minicab rides in London were sound tracked by African & Caribbean pirate radio stations playing the most incredible Downtempo Soul, R&B, Roots and Gospel. For me, the better the DJ, the slower BPM they would have the guts to play. And here in London even today, generally speaking, the blacker the party, the slower the music ( and inevitably, the hotter the vibes )…a simple equation really. This 33 hours worth of music features tracks from every genre and every era……the only thing they all have in common is that they would sound pretty dam good at 8am Sunday morning in the back of a minicab on Coldharbour Lane, Brixton.

I started this “vintage" series back in 2007 and am long overdue making another fair few volumes since I been shopping non stop since then🕳💦⚰️. Some of the cuts are a bit scratchy and worn but personally speaking I think this adds realness and character. These are actual physical records with real histories, some of them 40 years old.....some of these tunes have gathered their sonic patina from some REAL 🔥🐗parties ....eat your heart out Spotify-playlist-on-an-iPhone-speaker generation.💪🏼😜
