"Zukunft" is a rather small club nested in Zürich's red light district and might just be the main spark that started my Quarion project ages ago... this spot has a very special place in my heart and it always has been my "home away from home".
On that night in July, the people on the dancefloor were open to everything and I had the pleasure to share the decks with Schacke99, an excellent DJ who played very inspiring tunes.
This one-hour set was recorded after his intro and I enjoyed turning up the heat bit by bit!

Here's the recording of my recent gig at Paloma in Berlin. I played the opening for one of my all-time favourite producers: mighty Ian Pooley. A deep-house fueled warmup set with loads of classic tunes and recent and unreleased gems.

A veteran of electronic music, Cassy’s career as a DJ started in the 1990s, bringing her from her native Austria around the world, first settling in Berlin for a residency at Panorama bar in its earliest days. Since then, she’s gone through countless big changes as an artist: growing her voice as a DJ, experimenting with production and singing, starting a label, becoming a parent, mentoring, touring, teaching, and everything in between. 

In this conversation, we explore the evolutions, transitions, and changes in the life of an artist, and how each phase has helped bring Cassy to where she is today.

We're excited to welcome Arkajo to the mix series this week. He's well known for his work with Dorisburg as part of the one-of-a-kind house duo Genius of Time but we're also huge fans of their Aniara Records label with its beautifully deep sonic soundscapes and have coveted so many of their releases over the years.

With his background in jazz composition, live performance and behind the scenes studio work, he is equal parts producer, musician, dj and technological wizard. A keen understanding of sound, rhythm and harmony is evident on his releases as well as in his dj sets, locking your body in rhythm and exploring distant vistas in your mind.

"This is a mixtape in the literal sense of the word, recorded in my living room onto cassette tape. I've primarily selected records that have been in my bag for the last couple of months, along with some new bits that I find very exciting and inspiring. It's a mix on the housier side, gradually descending into a darker vibe, signing off with a remix of one of my tracks by one of my favorite producers and DJs, Polygonia. This remix will be featured on the next instalment of the Arkajo label. Enjoy!" - @arkajo

Detroit dance music thrives on intergenerational connections. In the late '70s and early '80s, the late Ken Collier mixed disco, soul and early electronic dance music in eye-opening DJ sets that left a mark on up-and-coming artists like Delano Smith. Once Smith established himself in the city's explosive techno community, he, in turn, influenced soon-to-be legends like Juan Atkins, Eddie Fowlkes, Jeff Mills, Norm Talley, Mike "Agent X" Clarke and others.

Now an elder statesman, Smith is etched into our history books as a crucial contributor to Detroit dance music, both house and techno. He's known especially for the Detroit beatdown sound he pioneered alongside Talley and Clark—slower, sexier records than what Detroit techno is generally associated for. (The trio even put out an RA Podcast under the name in 2010.) 

It's more recently that Smith has become known as a producer. He started his own label, Mixmode Recordings, and became a regular on Berlin imprint Sushitech, where he released many of his albums, including the jazzy deep house masterclass An Odyssey. His style has evolved over the years to incorporate ambient, dub and more contemporary techno influences.

More recently, Smith's career has been sidelined by an ongoing battle with a rare and untreatable form of cancer. He's hosted livestreams throughout his ordeal to keep in touch with his fans. His RA Podcast, which he calls his "Legacy Mix," is a celebration of his favourite sounds: euphoric chords, jacking drums and deep-space melodies, the elements that have and will continue to reverberate through Detroit and beyond. It also marks the beginning of a more hopeful period for Smith, as he gets ready to travel again, especially with his Legacy Detroit series, which celebrates the lineage he's an indelible part of, and always will be.
