Chloe Lula (@chlo-lula) is a Berlin-based DJ, producer, and journalist. She is the Managing Editor of Resident Advisor, the Editorial Director of Refuge Worldwide Radio, and the Critical Beats columnist at The Wire magazine. 

She received her master’s degree from Columbia Journalism School in 2020 and is a fellow with the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting. Her writing has appeared in the Washington Post, the New York Times, Politico, and Esquire, among other major publications, where she covers gender justice, human rights, and their touch points with music and activism. 

She put out her debut EP, ‘Errant Bodies,’ on aufnahme + wiedergabe this spring, and will release with Berlin's Instruments of Discipline and Ciarra Black’s Pendulum imprints in early 2022.

"I’ve been leaning hard into non-4/4 rhythms over the last year or so, and this mix is really a showcase of the kind of music that’s been really inspiring to me (electro, breaks, DnB, jungle. etc.) I’m especially into artists who are able to meld these genres with dark industrial and EBM tropes, which is definitely the direction I see my music moving in!"

Since then, she’s become a long time resident at Tresor, embarked on a career as a producer ( her debut EP, Diving the Innermost came out on Phase Fatal’s BITE in 2018) and made the jump to Berghain. But there’s more to Mendez than being a connoisseur of all genres dark and hard-edged. In addition to being a DJ, Mendez is an entrepreneur and a science enthusiast. KEYI sat down to talk with her about her world before techno and the ways in which research and precision define her creative work and her extra musical life.

His music defines itself as a mixture between New Wave and Break Beat Electro which is influenced by the distorted drum machines of The Haque as well as the romantic synth melodies of the 80s San Fransisco.
Over the last two years, L.F.T. has released several records on different labels like to Return To Disorder, Mechatronica, Eye for An Eye Recordings and also his debut album on Osàre! Editions

The centennial podcast of this series is brought to us by Morah. At some point in his career, the dark prince of Athens and resident of the Phormix label and event series achieved a unique and iconic status with his unconventional take on gritty electronic music that transcends genres. The first time we experienced this in the flesh was in the old Griessmuehle location on the Sonnenallee in 2019 and were blown away.

Whether it was his debut release on Helena Hauff's label, or the many life-changing performances over the years that are well-documented, his body of work speaks for itself as he graces labels such as Berceuse Heroique, Vanila, Brokntoys, Lux Rec, and most recently on Body Musick as well as a self-released album called Zesta. He's captained the Phormix event series as a resident and is a core part of the Athens crew whose label boasts some of the most exciting releases coming out. He's added another time-lasting performance to his list during the most recent DT Camp two weeks ago. It should be no surprise that we invited him as a special guest for our ADE event together with Pinkman Records on October 19th and can't wait

Phase Fatale is the Berlin-based techno project of Hayden Payne. Since 2014 the New York native has earned a reputation as a techno innovator, both for the broad spectrum of dystopian, gritty, industrial-laden electronics included in DJ sets as well as his deep understanding of synthesis and sound design in his own productions.

Phase Fatale has been turning heads with his debut album in 2017, and 12”s on labels such as Jealous God, Ostgut Ton, and its sub-label unterton. He has since settled into residencies at both Berghain in Berlin as well as 中 KHIDI in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi.

In 2018, Payne launched his own label BITE, where he introduced Soft Crash - the pi- oneering ‘Italo body music’ project in collaboration with Pablo Bozzi. In 2020, Payne released his second solo album Scanning Backwards on Ostgut Ton, while 2022 saw his third solo album and the widely anticipated debut album by Soft Crash.

Phase Fatale’s output as a selector, as well as his productions and curation on BITE demonstrate Payne’s unique musical vision, drawing from new and classic references: dark ambient drones contrasting with the raw, punchy dynamics of industrial and post- punk, cold wave aesthetics combine with 4/4 techno functionality – all stitched togeth- er meticulously with strong atmospheric sensibilities, careful and precise mixing
