Jan Loup’s territories of exploration are split into several directions. With both her show Mana-Machine (LYL Radio) and her collective “Aïra”, she visits ambient sounds, soothing pads and organic glitches, depicting fantastic mental landscapes, at the crossroads of dreams and consciousness. In her own productions and in various parties, she seeks to transcend emotion through more intense rhythmic mixtures, filled with saturated drums and its distortions. She conceives her dj-sets like rituals, associating track by image and texture affinity, always in the notion of expressing or liberating the emotions by listening and through dancing. In her universe the party time is lived as a ceremony, the escape of capitalism and the prison of the ego, to find back the sense of self and the connexion to others, rediscover our wildeness, with or without success.

Jan opens her set with didgeridoo and sets the signal to "ritual" but goes way beyond the expected organic feel and drags us through new mind territories and seductive dirt in her two-hour selection for WPD.

Jan seems like she'd be that perfect aya sitter. This is a whole new voice within the slow-burner sect. It's not even slow. The word is - impressive.

Pour ce 3ème épisode intitulé "From Issues To Tissues", Poiçon invite Elvira pour partager les platines. Personne sympathique aux goûts étranges, Elvira fait partie du noyau LYL Radio Bruxelles et entretient des projets artistiques mêlant son, danse, performance et scénographie entre-autres. Une sorte de pokémon en évolution constante qui aime entreprendre des nouvelles choses.
Quelques mots du pokémon sur sa première heure : "From Issues to Tissues est un va et vient constant entre attraction et rejet, tension et relâchement, une expression d'un amour qui nous happe d'excitation et à la fois nous déstabilise. Des conflits aux kleenex s'expriment à travers Elvira qui nous met des tunnels d'hypnose sonore et prend des virages soudains vers des breaks sentimentaux."

If bass-heavy polyrhythms, breaks, and seductive slow jams are in your alley, this week’s Rhythmic Culture podcast is something not to miss. Hailing from Puglia in Southern Italy, Silvia Kastel’s musical background began in experimental voice and electronics while studying sound engineering and electronic music in New York. She started performing live in 2008 with a main focus on experimental electronic music and extended vocal techniques. Evolving into DJing while based in Berlin between 2014 and 2018, first on radio and then in clubs, and now based in London with a monthly residency on NTS, her range has expanded to combine this history of sonic exploration of the outer edges with a sensual club music that simultaneously provokes the bodily push and pull of dancefloor tension and feverish release.

After heavy-duty releases on self-administered imprints Low End Activism and Sneaker Social Club, as well as London’s beloved graffiti-laden mutant-bass stronghold Seagrave (RIP), the almighty Low End Activist makes a welcome debut with the ESP Institute. No stranger to mining distant regions the hardcore continuum and the residue of soundsystem culture at large, his relentless traversing and assembling of U.K.-specific rhythms demonstrates there is no end in sight when it comes to evolving the region’s musical gene pool. The 5-track 'Gossip Is The Devil’s Radio' strings together a smear of dystopian instrumentation—ghostly pads wrapped in melancholy, percussion that marries bleep with low resolution shrapnel, and vocal fragments that resemble a control tower’s two-way radio on the fritz—all imperfectly focused through a damaged lens of dancehall. We’re drawn to a dull moan that pervades throughout the record, reminiscent of the nihilistic moments in Abigail Meade’s score to 'Full Metal Jacket' where the sonics resemble a slow churn of molten steel occasionally punctuated and pierced by crystalline shards. The depth between the bone dry immediate foreground and distant wet background creates an exquisite sense of longing which isn’t inherently dark or menacing, but seductively bleak. As voyeurs, we may certainly appreciate the aesthetic LEA portrays, but we can’t fully comprehend the sense of escapism rooted within this music without having come of age in the damp and restless confines of England on the cusp of Thatcher’s abuse. Its a reminder that the light at the end of a tunnel, while it may be dim and grey, is still a light after-all, and the only way out is through.
