Youngsta is one of dubstep’s most foundational figures, an integral force in shaping the genre from its earliest days at iconic club night FWD>>. A specialist through and through, he’s stayed true to the sound throughout its evolution, pushing the original minimalist style that’s now seeing a resurgence in interest.

Alongside his On Cue mix of stripped-back dubstep “ammunition”, he speaks to DJ Mag’s Rob McCallum about how the sound came to be, the vital impact of his sister, Sarah, his struggles with addiction, and his hopes for the future.

This mix contains heavy rhythms to pair with the joys and frustrations of new beginnings. One of Mother Mary's friends always says “new year, new year” as a joke around January 1st, instead of something more peppy like “new year, new you!” This mix comes from a place of reflection upon the lightness as well as the friction that can both typify stepping into new opportunities in life.

About Mother Mary
Mother Mary (she/they) is Alex Naylor, a second-generation settler living on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples (currently known as Vancouver, BC).
She brings together elements of UK bass, breaks, emotionally-charged techno, and dark 2-step, always with one eye on the dance floor.
When not in the rave, you can find her planning immersive audiovisual dance experiences with the Radiate crew. In the daytime hours she works in mental health and addictions as a clinician.
