Hi, my name is James Nicolson, a 19 year old sound engineering student and aspiring DJ/producer mainly focussing on techno, occasionally house, trance if you’re lucky, and pretty much everything under the sun for the craic. My journey into DJing started way back in 2010 at 4 years old when my family moved from Wales to The Netherlands where I was exposed to Radio 538. There, they often played the biggest EDM hits of the time which immediately had me hooked on an electronic sound. One of my close friends who lived near me had a big brother with a simple little controller, giving me my first taste of using DJ gear. From here, I found a love for Big Room which led me to hardstyle, which led me to hard techno, which then led me down the rabbit hole of “proper” techno where I feel I’ll stay forever. In my mixes, I pride myself in trying to have fun and set a mood, taking the listener on a journey of sounds and unique atmospheres. Artists such as Dax J and Oscar Mulero have been most influential in the way I mix, but not yet in production which is still a WIP.

My introduction into Bicep came in 2022, on the release of Water, initially I’d only ever heard Glue but my love for euphoric feel good tunes lead me to the recommendation of Water on my release radar after being a large listener of Aphex Twin, Joy Orbison and Mall Grab. Thinking about it, I’ve no idea how I wasn’t neck deep in Bicep sooner…

My first and unfortunately only experience of Bicep live was at Leeds Festival in 2023, while it was unfortunately in the bright daylight, I had an absolute blast and my love for Bicep was well and truly locked in.

For Week 2 of our 5 weeks of Pride colabs, we are in London, UK with FEEL IT the party co‑produced by legendary queer collective Little Gay Brother and the iconic drag DJ‑producer Jodie Harsh. Second in their selection is I. JORDAN.

I. JORDAN is a defining force in UK dance music. Since their debut in 2019, the Doncaster-born, London-based DJ and producer has carved a unique path with rave-infused house and techno rooted in Northern culture and queer identity.

Known for euphoric, high-energy house that resonates far beyond the dancefloor, they’ve remixed Romy, Fred Again.., TSHA, and Pet Shop Boys, toured globally with Fred Again.. and Flume, and sold out shows from Manchester to Tokyo. Their debut album I AM JORDAN was selected as one of BBC 6 Music’s Albums of the Year in 2024.

Recorded in their studio at FOLD in London, this mix is a feel-good blend of sexy, euphoric house tracks they’ve been loving lately—closing with their own new release, Girl Reborn, featuring Tom Rasmussen.

Yousuke Yukimatsu was born in Osaka in 1979 and started DJing in 2008. He got his first big break in 2014 when he played with DJ Nobu and NHK'Koyxen. From then, Yukimatsu soon had the chance to play at Future Terror and Dommune, as well as supporting many of the most interesting names coming through Osaka, such as Cut Hands, Adam, Marcel Fengler, Oneohtrix Point Never as well as playing at the PAN records showcase. In 2016 Yukimatsu started his own party called “Zone Unknown”, which has invited people like Shapednoise and Imaginary Forces. He also helped in the compilation of tracks for YPY’s album, Zurhyrethm, on EM Records, and has released a mix CD entitled ‘Lazy Rouse’ through Black Smoker records.
 
2008年 大阪atmosphäreでのSPINNUTSとMITSUKI主催『KUHIO PANIC』に飛び入り参加して以降DJとして活動。 THE NAMINOHANA SPECIALでのKEIHIN、DJ NOBUとの共演から親交を深め、2014年春、千葉FUTURE TERRORでプレイ。 2015年は2度のDOMMUNE出演、goatのサポートを数多く務め、PAN showcaseではLEE GAMBLEとB2B。Oneohtrix Point Neverの前座を務めるなど、活動の場を拡げる。 2016年2月、SHAPEDNOISEをゲストに迎えてPARTY『ZONE UNKNOWN』始動。 5月、BLACK SMOKERよりMIX CD『LAZY ROUSE』をリリース。

Electronic Explorations – Japan special
 
Japan has long played a fundamental role in electronic music, from being the home of many of its defining instruments to the early contributions of artists such as YMO, then Fumiya Tanaka, Keni Ishii and DJ Krush, amongst others. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in the country as another generation of artists has come to the fore, with artists like DJ Nobu, Ena, Ryo Murakami and Goth-Trad gaining international recognition. 

Electronic Explorations has recently featured mixes previously from Japanese producers such as Wata Igarashi and Katsunori Sawa. But geography and language barriers mean that some of the country’s talent is not seen. So for this series we wanted to put the spotlight on the next wave of artists in Japan. All are primarily DJs and at different stages of their respective careers, but each has a distinct and interesting take on electronic music.
