For episode thirty I thought I'd change things up a bit. So far the mix series has been focusing on showcasing DJ's that I enjoy what they are doing at a local level here in Australia along with further abroad too. This is the first mix in the series that I have put together myself the recording from a recent visit to Brisbane Meanjin via a live stream from @QUIVR which is a venue, education facility and livestream location all in one. Well worth checking out if you happen to be in the area.

"Vocals go hand in hand with the grime I know." Ahead of his appearance at London's Waterworks Festival, the UK artist discusses the significance of MCs, working with Skrillex and more.

Marc Veira, AKA  Flowdan, sees MCs as the "hub of all the vibes." Growing up in East London's rich dancehall and reggae scene, he developed a singular view of music that blossomed into a career as a well-known MC and cofounder of the grime collective Roll Deep. Alongside a string of successful EPs and collaborations come on labels like Hyperdub and Tru Thoughts, he recently earned widespread plaudits for his collaboration with Skrillex and Fred Again…. on their anthem, "Rumble," which came out last year.

In this RA Exchange with DJ and radio host Tash LC, Veira discusses how he got to this point, starting from his time at home and his mother's passion for sound system culture. "The MC being the hub of all the vibes—I heard that in sound system culture," he says. He believes there still isn't enough credit afforded to vocalists in live performances more generally. "The grime I know, the garage I know, the drum & bass I know—vocals go hand in hand with all of that. And at festivals, massive artists headlining shows have no mention of their vocalists. That's not what the music is."

Veira also unpacks his love for working with other people, his mentorship of up-and-coming producers and using Flowdan as the character behind which he hides his natural shyness on stage. To hear more about his creative process and trajectory, listen to the episode in full.

For the thirty sixth episode we invite @noisecasino to provide the soundtrack, who hails from Bogota, Columbia and currently based in Berlin. The mix is a melting pot of bass influenced breakbeats, rhythms and grooves staring at a steady 100bpm slowly working with the tempo as the mix progresses, keeping it modern and engaging which is a nice refreshing change from the more high octane sets I have come across of late. 


This was recorded at the @delphiciris Records launch party, a new label I co-own which was recorded at @kimchirecordz in Berlin.
An excellent soundtrack that paired well with the informal afternoon summer vibe of the launch and was a standout on the day (as were all of the guests). Im happy to have a chance to review the track list to dig into some of the excellent producers and labels that are new discoveries to me also.

In the ethereal realm of the void there existed The Delphic Iris, a being of otherworldly power and boundless knowledge. The Iris was said to possess the ability to see into the future and hear unique and strange sounds from times and dimensions beyond our grasp. 

Legend has it that with a specific alignment of space and time, and with the mastering of secret ritual practices, The Delphic Iris can be conjured by mortal musicians to ignite and inspire their souls.

History's stark warnings tells us that summoning The Delphic Iris is fraught with danger and risks the possible collapse of our universe, for the Iris is an unstable and powerful being. However, The Delphic Iris' visions are often too tempting to resist much like a Siren's song.  

In recent years, electronic musicians Drox and 16 Faces came across the existence of the Delphic Iris through secret texts found in "the Book of Tidder" and were able to command its power for short periods of time, and so “Delphic Iris Records” was born.

Fortune has been kind to Drox and 16 Faces so far, despite the obvious risks of summoning the entity. We do not know why this is exactly, as the ceremonies are still to this day shrouded in mystery. What we do know is that we too are lucky, because now we can hear a small glimpse of what The Delphic Iris sees.

  It is up for debate as to whether The Delphic Iris’s intentions are good or evil, so listen with caution and may these sounds consume you, for the future of music looks promising, at least for now ….
