In this episode Jared speaks with Terre Thaemlitz, a music producer, DJ, writer and public speaker, whose work over three decades offers uncompromising critical examinations of media distribution, queer identity, and non-essentialist transgenderism. 

Raised in Missouri before moving to New York in the late 1980s, Terre was a resident DJ at storied queer nightclub Sally’s II in the early ‘90s. Since then, Terre has released music, critical writing, and video via her own Comatonse Recordings, as well as independent labels including Germany’s influential Mille Plateaux. Based in Japan since the early 2000s, he also continues to perform and record under the deep house alias DJ Sprinkles, releasing the acclaimed 'Midtown 120 Blues' in 2008.

For the 9th edition of Transient Landscapes, I was delighted to be joined by New Zealand-born, Melbourne-based producer, DJ Chrysalis! @djchrisellis . Chris's playful production style first jumped out to me in 2019 after hearing his EPs out on @headrushenterprise, he has since released another stomper EP on @alfatriguena, fantastically layered progressive bangers laced with nuggets of bouncy grooves.

His mixes delve deep into evocative imagery and for that reason, I couldn't imagine a better guest for a 'place'-themed show. We have assembled a 2-hour 'non-place shopping centre special' inspired by the acoustics, seasons, anonymous shoppers, and the generally transient nature of consumer spaces that, in their hollowness, reflect our own lives back at us through a labyrinth of glossy glass, tiles, and tannoys. Enormous thanks to Chris for his absolutely beautiful contribution in the 2nd hour, in his own words:

"I imagined walking a shopping centre with sound canceling headphones seeing tall walls of candy-coloured consumables; swirling seas of desperate, urgent shoppers vying for the cheapest electronics; occasionally getting stuck in a loop - physically and mentally; taking right turn after right turn, sometimes calm, sometimes alarmed, always looking for an exit"

A mix known as "Aun Aprendo," titled after the Francisco Goya drawing of the same name
Translated, the title means "I Am Still Learning," and depicts the elderly Goya (who would pass away two years later) with two walking sticks

The mix ends with a reading of a short story written by artist Irena Haiduk and read by art historian Darby English, from Haiduk's collection of writing entitled, "All Classifications Will Lose Their Grip," first presented at the Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen. The story recounts the creation of portraits for the Yugoslavian Dinar's hyperinflating currency in the early 1990s.
