At this point, Shy One might be familiar to most music fans as one of the hosts of NTS's daily breakfast show, Soup To Nuts, where she helps listeners across the UK and Europe settle into their morning routines with an eclectic and soulful selection of dance music and downtempo. But the London artist has been around a lot longer than that, with a discography that goes back well over a decade. 

She started releasing music as a regular on Scratcha DVA's label, and it was there that she sketched out a recognizable but impressively varied approach rooted in her home base of London. On her records, Shy One sometimes feels like London incarnate, synthesizing the histories of Black British dance music—drum & bass, grime, UK funky, broken beat, jazz, you name it—into one syncretic and immensely appealing sound. But her music glows with the warmth of American deep house, too, which lends it a timeless, ageless quality that has proven immensely appealing. She furthers this mission with Private World, a party she started with Ruby Savage. The name kind of says it all: she's inviting you to her own personal space, but what awaits is a whole wide world of music and culture.

Her RA Podcast feels like a hybrid between a club DJ set and her morning show, and here, she zeroes in on a the lineage of American house music from the '90s and beyond, featuring tracks from the likes of Green Velvet, Marcellus Pittman, Roy Davis Jr., Wbeeza, Jay Daniel and more, plus a spotlight from Baltimore club king DJ Technics. It's patient and easygoing but perfect for a small dance floor (or a livingroom party), focused but stylistically diverse. It's everything we've come to expect from an artist like Shy One, who weaves stories and histories with her DJ sets, and does it effortlessly, too.

"Here's the long promised recording of my set from the Numbers LDN warehouse party back in December of last year.

There were a few Serato technicals to start with, hence the reason for the first few tracks being played without any attempt to blend them, and because it was December, I played some of biggest tunes of the year as a kind of retrospective of one of the best years of UK music in history (IMO). I also put a few of the tracks that I rinsed heavily in my sets throughout 2011, plus the usual selection of surprises. For the same reason, there's also a few blends from my Fabric CD and the RA mix.

We need to say a really big thanks to Black Atlantic and Red Bull, but most of all the troops who stayed till half past 6 in the morning singing along to all the tracks and dancing on top of their mates shoulders. You guys made one of the best parties we've ever been involved in so thanks very much."

At some point in the early morning the collective pulse in the room shifted. Gone the rollercoaster of the peak hours. Sweat gave way to the fog of the hazy hours, and the crowd has evolved to those in need of undulating epiphanies. This is the stage on which fabric92 unfolds.

"I love playing every hour of the night. However the late hours seemed strangely under represented within this series, and I thought it would be good to start there instead of using this opportunity to add another peak time chapter to the collection."

In a few years this versatility has marked the London born Call Super as one of the brightest new lights on the DJ landscape. His rise has been steady and remarkable, reinforced at every stage with music that draws on a panoply of influences. The son of a New Orleans jazz clarinetist, his curiosity for music was driven by a childhood playing Spanish guitar and the piano before being burnished through teenage revelations in the London club scene.

"The fabric mix series has played an influential role in my learning of my craft. As influential to me as the club itself. The discs recorded by Ellen Allien, Craig Richards, Robert Hood, James Murphy and Pat Mahoney all taught me quite distinct things about track selection and pacing that I think about to this day. The John Peel one became an elegy that I still remember him by as much as his radio shows that I used to listen to. Because of this I wanted my mix to do a few things. Primarily I wanted it to be highly personal, a Polaroid of my way of mixing records. Because my own technique has been influenced by other discs in the series, I had to capture the way I sometimes play in a club."

And that is what this mix is, the sound of a DJ who has drawn in so much in finding their own voice. Records layered and sliced with a deft array of techniques and a singular vision for the room and the time they are operating in. fabric92 eschews the common computer based approach and gives the listener a snapshot of a misty reality. Music should give you a better context for the everyday, it should elate, it should make you angry, sad, it heightens life. This understanding is at the root of Call Super's work, though with this recording he puts it differently:

"For the listener, I simply wanted the music to take you out to sea so we could watch the weather together. This isn’t about getting beat upside the head, this is us dreaming in the dawn."
