I saw James Holden's Set at Picnique Electronique in Montreal in 2007, it changed my life. Made me get more creative with my sets.

The latest addition to our semi-regular podcast series is by fresh-faced Utrecht artist Maximoto, also known als producer, DJ, and nightlife promoter https://soundcloud.com/maximotodj. Maximoto can be seen as Rochat’s retro-tinged house project. There’s an EP incoming on our sister sublabel OOSSHA, and Maximoto will make his first appearance this Saturday at the SoHaSo takeover of the 2nd room at Utrecht’s club WAS. 

For this first sign of life, Maximoto crafts an exquisite mix of late 80s inspired house, acid touches, and big melodies. Some heavy hitters (Massimiliano Pagliara! Sterac!) make an appearance, but the overall feel comes closer to NY house icons Dream 2 Science. All in all, an excellent introduction to this new addition to the SoHaSo family, with plenty more to come in the near future!

Almost 3 hours in the mix laying down some slow, deep, moody sounds moving through to some faster, tougher deep stuff. Maybe the fact that the heating had broken down on the icy cold night this was mixed had something to do with the vibes I laid down?! Vinyl only, off-the-cuff, one take, imperfections included.

Recorded using 2 x Reloop RP-7000 Turntables and an Allen & Heath Xone:23. Picture taken in my home county of Gloucestershire, England, overlooking May Hill near The Forest of Dean.

Man Power has always been an artist shrouded in mystery. Although we now know him to be Geoff Kirkwood, for a long time his identity had been a secret known only by those for whom he produced. 

As a British artist, since moving from Berlin to Mexico his lifestyle choice for pursuing music is also a unique one. His records have landed across a number of labels varied in their musical approaches, though he’s probably best known for putting out records on John Talabot’s Hivern Discs and Jennifer Cardini’s Correspondant, where he also released his debut album in 2015. 

As you might imagine for someone with such a coloured back story, behind Kirkwood’s music is an obvious aim to avoid definition by genre. This is a philosophy apparent on his recently launched Me Me Me imprint, which fits only loosely into a strand of house and techno notable for its melodic sound. 

You can also hear it on this laid-back mix he’s just dropped for us, which is getting us perfectly in the mood for his appearance alongside Bicep in Room One later on this month: bit.ly/manpower2502

A curated series where we commission artists to make an hour long mix of whatever inspires them to experiment, produce, play out and what they listen to.

John Tejada is a Vienna-born, Los Angeles-based electronic music composer and DJ. Tejada’s professional output of music began in 1994 and has never let up, including four albums for the revered label Kompakt, plus releases on Pokerflat, Cocoon, Plug Research, Seventh City, Playhouse, Defected, and his own label since 1996, Palette Recordings. Tejada has also been responsible for remixing over 100 songs for acts including The Postal Service, Télépopmusic, The Field, Bomb The Bass, Way Out West, Kevin Saunderson, Darren Emerson, Gui Boratto, Simian Mobile Disco and many others. Tejada’s latest venture as Wajatta is a new musical collaboration with international star Reggie Watts, having released their debut album, Casual High Technology, in 2018 and latest album Don’t Let Get You Down in 2020 on Brainfeeder. 

Tejada has traveled to more than 30 countries DJing and performing live at clubs – Berghain (Berlin), Fabric (London), Rex Club (Paris), Womb (Tokyo) – festivals such as Dance Valley (Netherlands), Decibel Festival (Seattle), Dekmantel Festival (Amsterdam), Detroit Electronic Music Festival (aka Movement), Mutek (Montreal and Mexico), Sonar Festival (Spain and Tokyo) and Sync Festival (Greece), as well as esteemed venues such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and twice at Walt Disney Concert Hall, both in Los Angeles.
