SETS I LIKE

The underground of electronic music is forever evolving, persistently merging and bringing together various strains of club orientated music. In fact our Friday night program, FABRICLIVE, has been focused on the very core of that since its infancy, linking together disparate sounds under one roof and giving play to pioneers and risk takers alike. Barely Legal, aka 23 year old DJ, Chloe Robinson, is a DJ who’s starting to show a knack for doing exactly that too, more about defying the genres and doing the unthinkable with her selections than re-treading old sets. 

Known predominately for a first rate fusion of grime, jungle, drum & bass, hip hop and so on...Chloe, who moved to London from Birmingham, has already scooped up recognition from a fleet of major underground players and platforms including BBC Radio 1Xtra (who picked her up for their flagship Daily Dose series last year), Hyperdub artist, Scratcha DVA and most notably the ‘godfather of grime,’ Wiley.  

Heading to our Farringdon haunt this week where she'll help toast our 15th Birthday alongside Loefah and an extended four hour show from Four Tet in Room one, we asked her to deliver yet another mix (Chloe's dropped one for our good pals over at Trap Magazine and appeared on Toddla T's BBC Radio 1 show just last week) just so that we could officially introduce her before the celebrations commence.

For this months Producer In Focus Episode it seems only fitting to shine the spotlight on Paul Saunders a.k.a WAX DOCTOR seeing as i featured a heap of his 1992 releases in my Basement Records label mix earlier this month.
Wax Doctor was a key figure in the early 90s Rave, Jungle and Drum & Bass scene.  Collaborating with notable producers like Alex Reece (Fallen Angels, Unit 1, Jazz Juice, Lunar Funk), DJ Pulse (Bounty Killaz) & Pascal (Clone Inc.) he played a major part  in shaping the atmospheric side of drum and bass, contributing to iconic labels like Metalheadz, Creative Wax, and R&S.
This mix focuses on the period between '93 and '95 featuring solo work,  collaborations and any remixes he did for others under either Wax Doctor or his Simon Templar pseudonym.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (23rd October) In Hour 2 it's a 'DJ Madd Re-Influenced mix' where the Hungarian artist drops a special mix looking back and deconstructing music he loved growing up. He told us;
"I had the idea to make an influences mix for some time but I wanted it to be a bit more special than a collection of tracks I listened to growing up. I came up with the idea to load the tracks into the software I write music in, and treating it as one long project the same way i write music: Adding and removing parts, leaving tracks playing or totally re-writing them. The selection had to be started with one of my earliest memories of music which was Paul Simon’s Graceland album which my mother used to listen to all the time. That definitely turned me onto african influenced music with the reggae and dub influences such as Bob Marley or The Specials soon to follow. As a teenager I was really into oldschool hip-hop and after I found out there is this crazy genre called jungle that uses sped-up hip-hop beats I was instantly hooked. I religiously followed early Bristol jungle and d&b, poking around old trip-hop, and discovering ragga-jungle through Congo Natty, where all these influences from dub / fast breaks and ragga vocals seem to come together. To this day these versions can only be heard in this mix and to keep it special, I think it will remain that way."

Even if you haven’t heard of Kings of the Rollers before, there’s a good chance you’re at least familiar with its comprising members. Serum, Voltage and Bladerunner are all well-established producers and DJs, known most commonly for making cutting-edge dance music at 170BPM.

Serum and Bladerunner first started working together several years ago, before they realised Voltage also aligned with their artistic visions. With the D&B scene heading in several different directions, the trio found similarities by fusing rolling tracks with classic jungle elements.

Having spent time together in the studio, they first joined to play last year for a set on the internet radio station Rough Tempo. With this receiving praise from the heads who listened, it followed naturally that they started playing more often.

With their next joint UK performance slated in for an appearance at FABRICLIVE on 24th February, they fired us over this pacey mix to show us just why we should all be paying attention to Kings of the Rollers.

Breakadawn aka Dj Dawn übt sich seit 1999 an zwei Plattentellern und einem Mischpult.Stark beeinflußt durch die Sounds von LTJ Bukem beginnt alles mit Intelligent Drum And Bass und entwickelt sich über die Jahre hin zu Liquid Drum And Bass,der wiederum stark durch Marcus Intalex und Calibre beeinflußt wird.
2003 kommt ein neues Musikgenre zu Dj Dawn's Repertoire hinzu. Nu Breakz genannt beinflußt es die Namensänderung in Breakadawn.
Nach dem ersten öffentlichen Auftritt im Jahr 2001 im Wehrschloss in Bremen kommt es schnell zu einer Kooperation mit dem Team Orange Soundsystem.Orte wie die Buchtstrasse oder die Alte Post werden zur Kreativen Spielwiese und nach einigen Jahren geht 2007 aus dem gemeinsamen Wirken der Zucker Club hervor.
Im selben Jahr findet auch Dubstep Einzug in Breakadawn's Plattenkiste und mit der Partyreihe "Subunternehmen" kommt es zu regelmäßigen Dubstep Partys in Bremen.Zu hören ist Breakadawn alle 2 Wochen auf dem lokalen Bremer Radiosender "Radioweser.Tv" und natürlich immer wieder gerne im Zucker Club ♥ [RIP]
