The music Dane MacDonald plays and releases on his Common Edit label is as warm as his North Canadian roots are not. Always serving up sets with love, he is a big bearded, long haired dancer at heart, and someone who has a close relationship with west coast disco dons Eddie C and Koosh. Now based in Berlin and still pressing up records that will always fire up a more friendly, cosy party, his reputation has grown beyond the cult. Digging deep through rock, new age and freaky disco, he knows how to throw a party as well as how to throw down records. 

Over the course of 90 minutes he takes us on a sparkling journey where only he knows the destination. One minute you’re lost in a warm and festive disco cut, the next getting down to a low slung boogie track. Heavier drum led house comes later on, before heavyweight dub disco tunes lead us to a jazz-funk crescendo that sizzles with real joy.

Ahead of our Community Connections series, we touched base with Cooper Saver & Jen Ferrer, who run Far Away in Los Angeles. The crew are responsible for bringing Four Tet, Floating Points, Palms Trax and more through Los Angeles’ warehouse circuit. Friday 1st December we’ll be teaming up with them for a throw down at El Cid. $5, and unannounced guests, see you front left.

1. How would you describe your music policy?
Our policy is less about genres or styles and more about encouraging guests to have fun and let loose. 

2. What makes a great party? 
A comfortable room with everyone attending on the same page - an encouraging, open minded dance floor.

3. What does your party stand for, and how do you express that? 
It stands for freedom of expression - for the party goers and also the DJs. Our goal has always been to bring our favorite artists to play intimate and unusual spots, which allows them to offer a more personal set and give the dancers something special and unique. 

4. What’s the greatest problem facing club culture in your city? 
2am cutoff in legal venues, high costs of permitting events, and lack of good venues that cater to dance music specifically. 

5. What’s your favourite memory of the night?
Cooper: It's hard to pick a number 1 favorite memory, they're all special and I learn a lot from each. I think the best memories are not only the amazing all nighters, but also the time spent stuck in traffic from the airport with my favorite DJs / artists talking about whatever. I guess that's a bonus to doing parties in LA.

Jen:  I'm tearing up a little thinking about all of the amazing moments we've had over the years. Some of my fondest memories are from the early residents-only nights when we would DJ ourselves all night with friends. It was so sloppy and ridiculous and probably what I'll think back on as the best times of my 20's. There's a beautiful camaraderie in sharing a DJ booth and I learned so much about my friends, myself, and DJing in general by cutting my teeth that way.
