Grant was a name that often cropped up among the most talented producers of the now robust and sprawling lofi scene, that did not quite fit the mold. The music was certainly inspired by classic Chicago and Detroit movements of the 90s and early 00s, but the sounds themselves were bold, dense, and textured. Through crestfallen harmonies and cascading rhythms, the mysterious Grant hangs warehouse weapons from crystal chandeliers. Over the past four years, Grant’s compositions have dripped with elegance as they wrap clubs and headphones alike in sumptuous basslines, spectral gospel chants, and graceful hooks---and he shows no signs of stopping. 

As Grant pumps the gas on his output heading into 2019, the veil over his identity flies away revealing Anthony Collins, half of the revered Frank & Tony and co-founder of the Scissor and Thread label. Bolting Bits is proud to present a new mix from this visionary talent, accompanied by a brief Q&A to peel back a bit more on this enigmatic artist.

We are kicking off the series after a short summer break with someone who we hold very dearly. We have always seen Basso as an ominous idol, someone whose Discogs -Ratings we used as a firm guidance when discovering new records on Germany’s flea markets. His very own Growing Bin is arguably one of the most consistently excellent vinyl-shops, Youtube-Channels and record-labels out there. 

Now about a year ago, the role-model became a friend, with who we share a subtle sense of humour and a refined taste for the perfectly placed “cheesy-yet-amazing”. This sentiment was somewhat reflected in a mix we did for Basso back then, and he brings it to perfection in this contribution to 5918mins. In his own words, he often used to work place-specific as an artist and tried to do this mix specifically for us, while staying true to himself. So what is the truth of Basso himself? Maybe it is just that he’s a bin – albeit a growing one. And what could be better than that?

Ian Wyatt aka Local Artist here to fill you in on the story behind this music. 

2018 was easily the worst year of my life. A number of intense and negative events seemed to collide including the life threatening illness of two of my closest loved ones. I spent a lot of time next to hospital beds trying to keep it together for the people around me and had to uproot a lot of basic human needs like home and security.

At night I kept making music, most of which will never see the light of day but was shared with my inner circle. What you hear on this record is what was reflected back to me after they gave it all a listen. Singing felt good so there’s lots of voice on here. Handing over control, letting in the unknown and giving up on my perfectionism seemed to fit the bill. The later stages of the music were finished while traveling with my partner for 110 days in the Mediterranean.

Gravity was finished in a Moroccan Air BnB after Jack J offered up a tasty arrangement of a previously loose ass live demo. Touch Tone started as a jam with Cloudface then was completely reimagined, keeping his keypad melody, and later touched up with Jack adding live drums. Boys Cry is dedicated to the memory of my Dad. Miss you and love you forever. And Fruits is just being itself.

E2E: Any particular environment or context you had in mind when recording this mix?

Myles Mac: Elaborating on the theme, I've been living down on the Mornington Peninsula for the last year or so which is home to some of Australia's coolest birdlife, recently prompting me and my girlfriend to go buy some binoculars and join the fray as amateur birdwatchers. Just from my place here, you can often see some pretty funky birds like the brightly coloured Eastern Rosellas and Rainbow Lorikeets, and we also get the odd visit from a cheeky Laughing Kookaburra looking for a quick bath. There's even a family of Wedge-tailed Eagles that circle around above. I'm sure one day they'll discover some pretty cool birds in outer space too, and I think this could be a nice soundtrack for all the interplanetary birdwatchers out there.

E2E: Any new projects you're working on or milestones with MDC? 

Myles Mac: MDC is into its 10th year now which is a bit of a trip! Just hope to continue sharing memorable listening journeys from all over the place but would like to focus a bit more on emerging locals as there are some incredible DJs down here that don't always get the recognition they should.

Will also be collaborating on a few tasty club shows with the Slow Burn crew next year which I'm quite excited about.
