Nervous Horizon Takeover - Volume 3 Special: TSVI - 16 November 2019

It's impossible to talk about the sound of DjRUM without using the word cinematic. Whatever he does, it has a feeling of grand importance, widescreen elegance and moving emotion that elevates it way above a dance floor soundtrack. Throughout the course of his career, the UK artist has drawn on downtempo, blurred the lines between drum & bass and dubstep and always imbued his music with spoken words snippets, piano and chamber instruments. His Portrait With Firewood album was a real high-water mark in 2018, and last year his latest outing on R&S once again managed to draw on every aspect of electronic music and come up with something all his own. 

His mix for us this week is a perfect ethereal rave that finds plenty of beauty in the sparse rhythms he draws on from the worlds of garage, techno and drum & bass. There is a delicacy and elegance throughout, even when the beats hit hard and fast as they do at the overdriven and manic mid point. The amen breaks come thick and fast after that, but eventually melt away to propulsive ambient soundscapes that suspend you in time and space. Blissful.

Although it was hard watching months of careful planning and hard work erased, we recognise the impact of this crisis goes much deeper than a few cancelled parties, so we decided to channel our energy into something more positive.

'Remote Access' is a collection of music sourced from both core members of our CF family, and a handful of our favourite producers operating in the UKs underground scene.

100% of proceeds for this release will go towards The Trussell Trust, supporting a nationwide network of food banks which are currently under an unprecedented level of pressure.

Basic Rhythm’s contribution to the electronic music scene, specifically in the UK, is far-reaching. Coming through in the 90s when every aspect of the hardcore continuum was exploding, Basic Rhythm is closely connected with the community in East London, having spent most of his early days at record shops such as Boogie Times in Romford, Music Power in Ilford and Total Music Records in Bethnal Green. He was also most notably a resident on the pirate radio station Rude FM.

Now with three albums under his belt, with the third being released last year on Planet Mu, Basic Rhythm launches new label Raw Basics with a split EP alongside Parris. Ahead of its release on the 5th June, we speak to the legendary artist about his experiences growing up in East London during the early days of hardcore and jungle, the impact of your environment, finding your identity and class issues within the electronic music scene and how the current global crisis is highlighting the inequalities.

In conversation with Thodén:

 - Describe the style and energy of the mix, where did you want to take it and how do you envisage it being played and received by the audience?

"The mix is, as with most, a culmination of styles I'm into at the moment. I tried to mix easy listening with more energetic music and take it through one to the other. I compiled a lot of old and new stuff that popped out to me without any preconditions as to their fluidity. It jumps around as a result, from mostly ambient in the beginning to a lot of fun stuff in the end without sticking to a specific formula. Mixes are more interesting that way I think"

- What sorts of music are you enjoying at the moment? 

"Most electronic music I listen to at the moment is whilst I'm doing these mixes, but it's coming back bit by bit. I'm enjoying a lot more non-'dance' stuff at the moment, most likely a result of the present circumstance. Been getting into ambient bits from labels like experiences ltd. and appendix.files. Recently did an album for Electromenager which took some inspiration from that"

 - Anything we need to keep an eye out for in the coming months?

"Got a V.A. release coming up with Pseudonym, other than that I'm just taking it slow for the moment; I just moved to Copenhagen to start my masters and that's been pretty busy so I'm trying to balance my time"
