"Five years after the first volume, ARENA01, Agva Records is back with ARENA02, a mega-pack of almost forty tracks focusing on the experimental and hybrid club scene of Latin America.

Released in 2016, the first chapter laid the foundations of the label and unveiled a solid tracklisting composed of close and local members of the collective (Defensa, EL PLVYBXY, CHLO…) and international producers (King Doudou, Bigote).

For this second edition, the label did not go easy and gathered a real festival line-up. ARENA02 features projects from all over the continent and beyond, from emerging artists to real headliners: Dengue Dengue Dengue, Lao (NAAFI, Mexico), Bungalovv (TRRUENO, Argentina), Endgame (Precious Metal, UK), Catnapp, Doxxed, Pobvio, or even the Mexican producer who signed the revival of pre-Hispanic tribal, Ozomatecuhtli. Peruvian producer Tribilin Sound was one of the artists at the forefront of the booming digital cumbia and global bass scenes in his country and now the Eck Echo label is about to pay tribute to his influential work by taking a deep dive into his catalogue - and giving it an extra little twist. 'Jalea Mixta' gathers some of the finest Latin American producers around - including Dengue Dengue Dengue, Loris, Mente Orgánica, Chancha via Circuito and more - who were invited to rework one of Tribilin Sounds' tracks from the past. Among them is 'Bilongo Con Sandunga', a song originally released on 'Aquí Siempre Bailamos' album back in 2014, which has now been remixed by Argentinian artist Tayhana who changed the original cumbia tune into a frenetic feast.

"Abran Cancha", a cry that demands open space for either performance, competitive sports or gymnastic stunts, is the name of the second EP by the Buenos Aires-based project.

As all beautiful workflows evolve, Ignacio La Conga organically became a production team as a whole, where each member brings their influences to the common playground creating well-defined soundscapes from the lowest latitudes of the southern hemisphere.

Raging yet sensible, gloomy but sparky, cinematic still danceable, modern and ancient sounds complement an album that holds Ignacio's presentation card to the world, dealt at the table of the Eck Echo house.

Obeka - Move Like So Remixes (out on the 31st of March via Basy Tropikalne)

'Move Like So Remixes' not only reimagines 2021's EP full of Afro-Caribbean explorations courtesy of Bermuda-born producer Obeka (@djobeka) but also perfectly showcases different approaches to the art of remixing.

Take 'Test System' - a dancehall-infused track that has proven to be the most popular song from the original release with radio plays in Kampire's BBC Radio 1 residency among others - which comes back in a form of three impressively distinct versions. Influential Peruvian duo Dengue Dengue Dengue (@dengue) revisit their DNGDNGDNG alias and brilliantly come up with a rework in which jungle breaks smoothly intertwine with reggaeton. Further into the EP you can hear the voice of Swordman Kitala, a talented Ugandan MC with numerous appearances on Nyege Nyege's sister label Hakuna Kulala, who flawlessly delivers his verses in Luganda alongside original beat produced by Obeka. Last but not least, a true gem has been cooked up by DJ Danifox (@djdanifox). Strongly departing from the original, he brings his characteristic sound that ideally sets the tone for closing the release with an almost jazzy feel and a somewhat nostalgic manner (saudade, one may say).

Two remaining instrumental songs from 'Move Like So' also get new versions - and both will be perfect for your DJ sets. Title track receives a speeding up treatment from Ultima Esuna, Mexican artist already gathering much deserved attention for her dancehall-leaning compositions that earned her a place on the 2022 Nervous Horizon compilation. And then there's Bandicut, one of the key figures in the Lisbon's global bass scene, who went all out and delivered a true banger making use of the West African drums from the original song.

"Brooklyn-based Ecuadorian-Lithuanian DJ Riobamba has launched a new, multi-faceted record label called APOCALIPSIS to highlight artists from Latin America and its diaspora. As she told The FADER, it will provide 'urbano storytelling for a ni aquí/ni allá [neither from here/nor there] creation of place.' The agency aims to do everything in its power (A&R, marketing, event production) to grow visibility for a wealth of Latin American narratives.

As a first taste of what's to come, Riobamba is sharing "Hecho/Hechizo," a bootleg she's made to tease a forthcoming EP from Ecuadorian producer amaF alaM (@z-e-w) on the label. It's one that epitomizes APOCALIPSIS's mission statement to the letter: a radically self-expressive piece of futurism that stands against a single, boxed-in definition of what Latinx club music can be.

''Hecho/Hechizo' is a translation of my love for noise, inherited folklore, and brujería,' Riobamba told The FADER over email. 'Earthquake field recordings, deconstructed DJ Playero reggaetón heritage samples via Kelman Duran, and amaF alaM's original collide for a retelling of a warrior call from his Quinchuqui indigenous community.'
