Pieter Kock - Facial Recognition (RIO08)

R.I.O. welcomes Pieter Kock aka DJ Peacock, one of the guiding souls behind the Berlin based bar/micro club O Tannenbaum. Musically active since 1986 as singer, guitarist, drummer and noisemaker, Peter already released a string of albums under different aliases like Billie and Ballie, The Hitmachine and Taladu.  Since the early 1990s he narrates haunting sonic stories as a DJ, playing a vast palette of styles - from cosmic and leftfield techno to tape experiments, sound-art, wave, world, jazz, punk, industrial, and all that weird pop music. Last year saw him liberating his first solo recordings under his civil name as a cassette tape named “Flocks & Murders of Entitled Spirits”, dropped by the Berlin/Vilnius based label Musikii. It unreels twelve sensitive tunes, made with the help of online synths and drum computers, Youtube travel- and talk show-videos or samples from Youtube synths- and rhythm box-demonstration videos. Now he refined his idiosyncratic style of music crafting a bit deeper and shares “Facial Recognition” – a gently twisted album that unites hypnagogic pop, library dances, cosmic funk, leftfield grooves and experimental sonic zones under one roof. His seven found sound tunes are layering a rhizomatic veil of unidentifiable web sounds, all transmuted into hazy looped ambiances, that trigger unconscious brain activities with future samples from the past, woven rhythm structures and a simultaneity of moments, derived from myriad world wide web informations. When it’s true, that nothing can have value without being an object of utility, then Pieter Kock managed to give the internet a new rate while using its manyfold informations as a tool to create art. Art, whose originality isn’t defined by the creator’s playful virtuosity. Instead, his sensibility of deciphering unheard rhythms, harmonies, and melodies in an avalanche of prefabricated ideas is his mastery. Pieter Kock transformed them into unfamiliar compositions with a familiar touch, that can evoke the feeling of being synchronous in a world of the many. A data rain without drops, a stream of consciousness without cognizance. Come in, drop out.

Tanzino is a series of releases that will shed light to unknown territories of mutant club music. In TZ01 we are proud to present the debut EP of Geneva's well kept secrets : John Levi’- active in the local scene as a DJ, known as a sharp selector, always has a jack in the box in his sleeve, he keeps the dance floor burning. Son of La Zone (ghetto or neighbourhood in French), he is reflecting on the streets of his hometown. He is chopping samples from the middle east and north africa mixing and transforming them to heavy rhymes that drop with a siren. The EP begins with Lumbago Zone, written in the midst of an awful back pain, fusing a Kurdish melody with metallic percussion and a dense distorted beat. In Zone he is melting gritty dancehall with jungle breaks and a sample of a north African bagpipe named Zukra, In Vacarme de la Zone, (noise of the Zone) is an exploding industrial banger with a violin sample that intensifies the tension to the maximum. On the closing remix, veteran producer Krikor, creates an apocalyptic percussive bass mayhem, finishing this EP with a boom. This EP is revealing the heart concealed in the dirt, for ones with brave ears and strong legs. Welcome to La Zone.

This album is a gift we made to the waters: oceans, glaciers, rivers, lakes, springs, wells. And also the internal water which constitutes the human body. Water has been proved to be a living being not just a chemical element. It keeps the memories and make them flow, it carves rocks, it registers emotions and waves, both visible and invisible. 
When I started to work on this project I was really keen on mantra music. I used to practice Kundalini Yoga and noticed that singing mantras had an immediate and clear effect on my emotional body. Furthermore I could learn the sanscrit verses quite quickly and felt like I deeply grabbed the meaning. I always wanted to interprete some of these mantras in my personal sound key. The occasion materialized when I got a proposal from an interesting organization based in Spain, working on sound preservation of the oceans. They sent me some stunning field recordings of whales, dolphins, breaking ice of the pole (which you can hear spread here and there in the tracks) and asked to compose a track. Later they commissioned a whole audiovisual performance. It was at this point that I decided to combine my passion for mantras with the idea of celebrate the water world. The performance was designed together with visionary artist Maria Torres. Its basic concept was that of a ritualistic performance in which through the power of chanting, sound, thematic visuals we could charge drinkable water, put on stage or in the audience, to transform it in a magical fluid capable of removing obstacles and purify all waters on the planet. So Aqua Mantra was born, our little gift to acquatic  ecosystems that are demanding human awareness to be rescued. 
The intent of this recording is to be used as a meditation, therefore we recommend to listen to it by respecting the sequence and to start and finish it with the opening and closing mantras. 
A special thanks go to the legendary painter Anna Paparatti for letting me use one of her beautiful unreleased mandala as artwork.
Adi Shakti and Durga Mantra were included in the soundtrack of “La Pitturessa”, a film documentary dedicated to Anna Paparatti by her daughter Fabiana Sargentini.

Following 2020’s 'Point Vacancies', the debut EP from Jamie Paton and Mike Bourne’s collaborative act Metal, the duo return with a trio of dubwise remixes from Mr Paton himself as well as a peak-time stormer from fellow Bristol artist, Hodge. The latter immediately sets the record ablaze with a driving thump, duo of grainy hi-hats and a chalky clap. He layers an anthemic three-chord pad progression, building octaves, peppering in arpeggiated bleeps and articulate lead melodies, then tops it off with a few modular elements that retain the character of the original, before climaxing in true rave fashion. Proper. The following three mixes by Metal’s own Jamie Paton make apparent his sonic obsession — the type of infinite tweaking that sees some artists/producers to the edge of madness, or at the very least satisfies some dragon-chasing addiction. There’s a successive deconstruction from 'Remix' to 'Dubwise' to 'Dubwise II', most notably a reduction of rhythm and drum machinery, but also in general tonality. The melody remains central but is gradually obscured, taking on a less and less recognizable form, and by the end we’re left with a skeleton of the track, quips and cranks, an assembly line of aluminum sheeting punctuated by demented nuts and bolts. As with the previous EP, the sparsity of elements illustrates just how far one can twist aesthetics, proving that self-imposed limitations can often propel an artist’s process and land them somewhere unfamiliar, somewhere foreign, somewhere enchanted.
