"Soundscapes reveal a lot about how people think and behave." The field recordist and musician talks about listening culture, repatriating African sounds and his new album with The Bug.

Today's conversation moves away from the dance floor, focusing instead on the soft, ambient soundscapes of the Berlin-based musician Joseph Kamaru—AKA KMRU—whose work has been featured at festivals like CTM, Mutek, Atonal, Horst Music and Arts, Dekmantel, and Unsound; concert halls like The Barbican; and major galleries and site-specific installations around the world. 

Kamaru moved to Europe from Nairobi, where he first became interested in music production, and field recordings specifically. As a graduate student in the sonic arts, he learned that the majority of the discourse around sound art practices is specific to Western Eurocentric or occidental ways of thinking. He's since embarked on a mission to use field recording as a means of repatriating African identities that are often left out of institutional archives and grapple with the legacy of colonialism. 

In this RA Exchange, Kamaru reflects on the sociopolitical angle of his work, and his observation that listening, by its very nature, is never neutral. He also talks about how civilisation and technology has changed our collective listening habits; how sound sources beyond the human hearing range make their way into his work with the use of electromagnetic microphones; and his new album, Disconnect, made with the musician Kevin Richard Martin (AKA The Bug). Last summer, I was fortunate to play a string of gigs in various clubs around Berlin and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. To be honest, I hadn't had so much fun behind the decks since the pandemic: it rekindled my love for Deejaying and reminded me why I was doing it in the first place.
This mix is an attempt to somehow catch some of the magic that transpired through these summer sets and I'm very happy how it turned out!
Featuring tracks that span 30 years of dance music across various genres (although with a strong emphasis on House), "Summer of 24" is my personal snapshot of this moment in time. Thanks to @mensch-booking for releasing it!

Max Essa returns to Is It Balearic? for his 9th release on the label. ‘When I'm Homeward Bound' brings us that classic Essa sound with a hint of Tears For Fears for good measure! The pads are delightfully gooey and subtly uplifting over gently percussive and stuttering beats and the whole thing is rich in lazy poolside energy. Nathan Dawidowicz remixes the original into a hypnotic, percolating piece of deep and tribal disco, while Secret Soul Society brings out the early evening house grooves ready for those sunset sessions. The record finishes with the closing cut, 'Chasing Horses’,  a super sweet late night groove with heartfelt chords and instrumentation.

Comment peut-on trouver du plaisir à cracher ses poumons ? Que signifie cette lubie généralisée autour de la course à pied ? Le capitalisme postindustriel nous a-t-il transformé en hamsters camés à la dopamine et au gel énergétique ? Prêts à se flinguer les ménisques pour compenser le vide intersidéral de nos existences sédentaires de bons petits soldats du secteur tertiaire ? D’où vient cette obsession masochiste de la performance, du cardiotraining et des chaussures à 200 euros ?  
 

Delphine Saltel consulte différents spécialistes pour repenser sa propre addiction au running, et éclairer notre pratique collective. À la lumière de la paléoanthropologie, de la sociologie et de la philosophie, se dégagent quelques pistes pour renouer avec nos instincts de chasseur-cueilleur, échapper au grand méchant Nike et courir hors des sentiers battus.

The beloved German producer talks about finding inner peace, overstimulation and his new album on Pampa Records.

Mental health is a topic that comes up frequently in the music industry, but it's still not discussed enough among electronic music's top performers. In this RA Exchange, Stefan Kozalla—better known as DJ Koze—opens up about his battle with anxiety, self-doubt and rising expectations that come with being a long-standing, high-profile name. He talks about overstimulation, music as rest and the compromises artists need to make to have relevance and staying power.

Kozalla, a beloved and eccentric German artist who has developed a cult following over the course of his career, has productions on esteemed labels like XL, Kompakt, Cocoon, Warp, Ninja Tune and BPitch, which garner praise as soon as they're released. "Every time DJ Koze comes out of the woodwork to drop a 12-inch—or even just a remix—we usually end up hearing it everywhere for months on end," wrote former RA editor Andrew Ryce.

Kozalla talks to RA contributor (and former editor) Matt Unicomb about his production process and early influences—an uncanny combination of Basic Channel and Public Enemy—as well as his forthcoming album, Music Can Hear Us, coming out on Pampa Records on April 4th. Marc Romboy's Systematic Recordings look to inspire once again with the release of an exclusive 'Mini-Album" from the Swiss producer, Ripperton. 

Following the huge success of "Niwa", his album for Joris Voorn's Green imprint and riding the constant wave of support for his productions on Music Man, Freerange, CLR, Versatile and of course his very own Perspectiv imprint, Ripperton looks to continue and further his reign as one of the most respected producers in the business with the release of "Lost In Colours." 

The Mini-Album opens with four new original Ripperton productions. "Lost In Colors (Tobias Welcome Song)" with its tear-like droplets and orchestral melody is the perfect opening act. The smooth vocal and warm acid line of "I Haven't Seen Much" follows, backed by the epic techno outing that is "Farraway." The originals are rounded off with the dramatic percussive cut, "Flume."
