The Satellite Era project began as a group of friends seeking to share art together - this quickly resulted in a diverse family of music makers spanning across the globe, each bringing eclectic ideas to the team that complement our sound. Through the power of association, we are proud to debut the first-ever collaborative release by two artists who met through our expanding community.

Phoenix-based multimedia artist Brendan Rincon is no stranger to our imprint; having released two singles on our Distant Arrays series under his real name, he has now transitioned his skills to building the Undulae project. Being both a student and teacher in electronic music, his sound design has made it onto commercial productions for various films and advertisements. Utilizing iterative composition to repurpose his creations, Undulae has solidified his personal style in what can be described as emotive yet challenging post-bass music.

Although having been around the community since its conception, we welcome Asheville-based producer Billy Morasso for a proper release on our catalog. A product developer at world-renowned Moog Music, he always finds himself surrounded by production hardware. Whether it be vintage relics or bareboned circuit boards ready to be toyed with, Morasso captures the essence of his gritty synthesizers and digitizes it to his liking. Aside from production, he has also helped spearhead an underground dance scene in Asheville with the “party w/djs” crew, bringing an array of core genres to his local community.

Combining the effort of these two prolific producers, “Boundary Test EP” is a contrast between complex experimentations and club music. Although intended for dancefloor usage, it does not cower away from challenging the listener with high-fidelity sound design, staying busy in the stereo space while keeping the low-end consistent for the club. The project kicks things off with “Veiled In Your Eyes,” a techy drum ‘n’ bass track that blends warm pads with glitching percussion. The title track, a fan-favorite in our recent label showcase mix, embodies UK garage with buzzing synths that feel playfully attentive. “Different Spheres” draws inspiration from the melodic side of bass music, bringing a more serious tone to the project. The EP closes out with “Love In Potential,” a warm jungle track that progresses into the sunset.

Throughout “Boundary Test EP,” a clear collision between influences can easily be heard, highlighting the similarities in Undulae and Morasso’s intentions. Combining organic hardware production with cutting-edge sound design via modern devices, this project aims to set a standard for experimental club music - one that pushes the envelope of its overall potential.

Satellite Trax: an expansion of our core imprint that focuses on dance-centric music and its club roots; part of the foundation within our sonic heritage. This sublabel serves as a primary source of dancefloor weaponry for DJs and enthusiasts aiming to unveil the latest rhythms heard from around the electronic music sphere.

Billa Bronx’s ‘Lithium’ is a tape-driven jungle anthem driven by rebellious mourning. It is the last material to be released by Astro Nautico co-head Bennett Kuhn under the Billa Bronx moniker. 

'Lithium' was born out of emotional extremes. Kuhn recorded the track during the 2012 Father Forgive EP sessions, a time when music became a drug of sorts — part medicine, part poison — used for modulating moods, defying numbness, and revolting against the fate of losing a parent to ALS. The Billa Bronx recordings were improvised using hardware synthesizers, a loop pedal, and 1999 breakbeat editing software and recorded in single takes. Today the raw kinetics of these sessions appear an Icarian flight: just months after composing them, Kuhn was twice hospitalized and diagnosed with type-II bipolar disorder. 

Releasing ’Lithium’ six years later attests to the moments of precarity and pain in between as well as ongoing work of re-inheritance and becoming in affinity with other psychiatric survivors, ex-patients, allies, and grieving people. With commitment to the thought that music can play a central role in ongoing health justice movements everywhere, ‘Lithium’ is dedicated to Kuhn’s co-organizers at the Creative Resilience Collective, a health justice and design group based in Philadelphia. 

‘Lithium’ is available now as a digital single or bundled with limited-run screen-printed Billa Bronx t-shirts featuring original artwork by Bennett Kuhn.

Netherlands' Niels Broos and London's Hyroglifics have teamed up for the collaborative project Rippps, unleashing their debut EP Hue on Alpha Pup Records, August 3, 2018. Five tracks of futuristic electronic music that blends stylistic synths and dynamic production work, Hue is equal parts unique, striking, and propulsive. The grooves are nonstop, and the electricity is boundless, giving the album a distinct vibe that further establishes their legacy in modern music. Recorded and shaped over the last two years, Rippps began when they met through their selection at Red Bull Music Academy Montreal 2016. Surrounding their obligations with the intensive lecture and class series, the duo would hit the studio any time they could, carving out ideas and structures into what's become their debut as a group.  

After meeting in Montreal, an immediate connection was fostered as collaborators and friends, resulting in a body of work they realized needed a place to live. Niels Broos released his self-titled debut EP in February of 2017 on Alpha Pup Records, and the connection was established for Hue to also land on the Los Angeles based label. The music they compiled during RBMA Montreal 2016 carried over with sessions at Niels Broos' studio in Utrecht the following summer. They made it a goal to search for the synchronicity and spur of the moment creativity that represented the original studio sessions. "We just kept on bouncing ideas off each other," states Niels Broos. "Similar to a tennis rally without having to pause the match a lot. Hyroglifics would also mix the projects and later add in FX and transitions to help smooth out the music. He would usually start off laying down a drum beat and then I would start writing and jamming out chords and melodies over the top. We both know when to let each other do the thing they do best. Sometimes this means giving each other some space to work something out, before judging an idea instantly. Also knowing when to work only when there's a certain inspiration and vibe going on instead of trying to push a vibe. I find making music is always about the marriage of those two things, but in this project, it always started with a vibe."

Most of the synths used on Hue were models they had access to at RBMA. This includes the Oberheim OB6, a Dave Smith Prophet, and a Moog Lil Phatty. Once the sessions picked up again in the Netherlands, the Korg Poly6 and Moog Voyager were used for some of the leads and extra solo's. Niels Broos and Hyroglifics recorded in Logic 9, helping the overall workflow of the different instruments present and the various studios worked out of. With the amount of layering on Hue, the music is deceptive in both its technical presentation and the elements that stand out. "What I also really love about the tracks," Niels adds, "is that harmonically, the songs are quite difficult and we managed to put these difficult musical ideas into tracks that don't sound difficult and stay easy to process." This type of presentation was also a direct influence of Thundercat's time with them at Red Bull Music Academy and the way he's constructed music over the years.

Rippps' Hue EP will be available worldwide across digital platforms on August 3, 2018. A live incarnation of Rippps is also currently in the works, with plans to showcase the record through intricate drum machine arrangements, triggered samples, and live synth work.

What happens when two like-minded producers get together in Vienna and spend a day together in the studio? Lots of cables and lots of fun! Monophobe is a meticulous producer with well-honed precision tools in his drawer. He mainly takes these out to oscillate between experiment and club. 

Sixtus Preiss is also a specialist for sound design but also for handmade microphones and the multi-instrumentalist is able to pull out surprising and maverick jazz fragments out of his hat. With the collaboration "Jaune" the two of them deliver the honey-colored soundtrack of late summer 2020.
