This volume is by our very own RISE member Walter Griot! 

Having root stems in Senegal, and touring experience all over his other native Germany he developed an innate sense of moving the crowds through his innovative take on African inspired House.

Walter Griot grew up in 80s Berlin in a rather progressive Senegalese Griot family (Griot = Traditional West African drummer). He was therefore from an early age exposed to various African percussion instruments like the Djembe & Sabar drums, the Kora and the Balafon. Moreover, with a father listed as a resident DJ in the 80s cult club “Dschungel”, electronic beats were also common sounds played in the household. These sounds together with various other musical elements from Africa and the African diaspora are the foundation of his DJ sets.

A foundational pillar in the maturing Ethiopian electronic scene, and the newest member of RISE, GHEDI has quickly established himself as one East Africa's top talents. Taking inspiration from a wide range of influences, his sound is firmly rooted in the space between music from the global south and forward thinking electronica. GHEDI seeks to decolonize dance music and showcase the sounds and musical cultures of lesser represented parts of the world. He now resides in Berlin seeking to expand his knowledge and spread his message of love and unity.

Her eclectic style unites people from different backgrounds through a shared love of music.

We are RISE, a Berlin based collective and label with cosmopolitan roots. Our members are Hyenah, Walter Griot, AMEME, GHEDI and Jane Ryse.  Collectively our members are from Nigeria, Benin, The United States, Congo Germany, Senegal and Ethiopia. We are heavily inspired by African House music, and equality, diversity and social justice is at the core of our identity.

We strive to create spaces where people can feel safe to express themselves, no matter their ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, or social status. 

We aim to distill and deliver some of the core tenets of African music, namely dance and emotion, to provide some color and warmth in Berlin’s harsh grayscale palette.
