We are very happy and excited to welcome back our long friend Shimza to the RISE Radio Show! The Tembisa-born DJ, producer and KUNYE label owner is unquestionably one of South Africa's leading light of the global afro house scene. He has charmed audiences around the globe with his unrivaled mixing abilities and explosive performances.

 His personal endeavor the "One Man Show” was launched by Shimza a decade ago in Temibisia, South Africa to raise funds for underprivileged children in his local community.

Aside from sharing his music, Shimza’s mission is to alter the manner in which South Africa’s youth consume content while encouraging them to use the medium of music to fuel education. Shimza firmly believes that this fusion of music and culture is the best way to engage audiences in topics that encompass South Africa’s rich history while also encouraging social cohesion in modern times.

RISE Radio Show Vol. 64 | Mixed By Shimza

This volume is by our very own RISE member Walter Griot! 

Having root stems in Senegal, and touring experience all over his other native Germany he developed an innate sense of moving the crowds through his innovative take on African inspired House.

Walter Griot grew up in 80s Berlin in a rather progressive Senegalese Griot family (Griot = Traditional West African drummer). He was therefore from an early age exposed to various African percussion instruments like the Djembe & Sabar drums, the Kora and the Balafon. Moreover, with a father listed as a resident DJ in the 80s cult club “Dschungel”, electronic beats were also common sounds played in the household. These sounds together with various other musical elements from Africa and the African diaspora are the foundation of his DJ sets.

A foundational pillar in the maturing Ethiopian electronic scene, and the newest member of RISE, GHEDI has quickly established himself as one East Africa's top talents. Taking inspiration from a wide range of influences, his sound is firmly rooted in the space between music from the global south and forward thinking electronica. GHEDI seeks to decolonize dance music and showcase the sounds and musical cultures of lesser represented parts of the world. He now resides in Berlin seeking to expand his knowledge and spread his message of love and unity.

Buruntuma is not just the name of a small village in Guinea-Bissau, in fact it is also the name of a DJ who is currently causing a stir in the Portuguese Afrohouse scene. Tradicional music from his native Guinea-Bissau is one of his central elements. Buruntuma has long since arrived in the Portuguese diaspora, but now he also wants to accommodate the music of his West African homeland on the global dancefloors.

Soulroots (NL) discovered House from (South) African soil in 2011 and immediately felt a deep connection and urge to push this sound. 

In 2021 he released his first full length album on the esteemed Madorasindahouse, featuring vocals from Soul Star, Zakes Bantwini, Jackie Queens and Toshi. Her eclectic style unites people from different backgrounds through a shared love of music.

We are heavily inspired by African House music, and equality, diversity and social justice is at the core of our identity.

We strive to create spaces where people can feel safe to express themselves, no matter their ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, or social status. 

We aim to distill and deliver some of the core tenets of African music, namely dance and emotion, to provide some color and warmth in Berlin’s harsh grayscale palette.
