This is remix is an ode to all those hurt by the prison industrial system of the United States, and is dedicated towards transforming the "eye for an eye" retributive justice model towards a restorative justice model - one that strengthens, rather than fractures, communities. 

This remix is based off of two recordings: Rising Appalachia's "Spirit's Cradle" and a reading by the great, late poet Etheridge Knight. "Apology for Apostasy" was one of many poems that Knight wrote while incarcerated, which were originally published in the collection "Poems from Prison." His poems bear witness to the resiliency of the creative spirit. Leah Song, of Rising Appalachia, has been a long time advocate of criminal justice reform and is involved in projects that bring yoga, song and mindfulness into prisons.

        Much to the credit of its title, Freediving, the new album from Roman Pavlov aka Rhythm of Mankind & Nature is just that: an extended, placid, lilting descent from a more vertical vantage point into ever increasing layers of deep blue chill-out psychedelia.
 
        The foreign worlds Pavlov creates across the 71 minutes of Freediving’s fluid event horizon are both technically well-crafted and sonically pleasing, and taken as a whole comprise a hopeful, organic record that plays well both in the background and in your headphones.

        Allusions to water, the ocean, and the fluid movement of both mass and energy are likely to color most descriptions of the contents of Freediving, and not just given the album’s title and song names such as “In Pacific Ocean”, “Breathe Underwater”, and “Touch of Blue Light”. The music is as hazy as sea fog and as gently swelling as a far-off breaker seen through a pane of stained glass. Each track herein is a type of journey in itself (no song clocks at under 5:00), and best taken in a dimly yet warmly lit room. There are hints of a lot of things going on here, from the emotionally-charged electro-chill of Enigma and perhaps Bjork, to the ambient worlds of Robert Rich, Brian Eno and a host of ambient knob twiddlers, to the dreamier side of Moby and current chill-wave darlings Washed Out, and even some hints here and there of the luscious, dreamy melancholia that characterizes some of This Mortal Coil’s more ethereal work. Very rarely - and all the more striking and mysterious they are for it - an artist comes along who is just that: An artist with a capital ‘A’. Doing something so different and special it’s as if creativity, ideas and - in Gazelle Twin’s case - sheer magic is rising from their every pore and floating into the atmosphere.

For atmosphere is the key word here.  Gazelle Twin’s influences are as far-reaching as the rhythmic wonders of Prince (hence this b-side cover), the Terminator soundtrack, the early choral music of composer Carlo Gesualdo and a mythical creature named Loplop (from whom Gazelle Twin – aka Elizabeth Walling - borrows her astonishing shape shifting image when performing her mesmerising, dreamlike live sets). So with all of this in the melting pot that is Gazelle Twin’s visionary mind, it is of little wonder the music plays out like some surrealist dreamscape – evoking an almost erotic Twin Peaks-esque mood where the listening is simultaneously drawn in by it’s all encompassing otherworldly magnetism and unnerved by a creeping eeriness that’s almost claustrophobic. 

‘Changelings’ with its existential lyrics, dramatic symphonies and dark electronica seems the perfect introduction to Gazelle Twin. The accompanying video is, produced and directed by Gazelle Twin, and featuring an abstract world of shifting storms and changing faces. All adding a chilly, surrealist underbelly to a track already hauntingly beautiful. 

‘Changelings’ is released on 8th November on Brighton label SomethingNothing Records. The single’s b-sides come in form of an abstract cover of Prince’s ‘I Wonder U’ and a remix of ‘Changelings’ by electro renegade The Enormous Shadow.

Gazelle Twin releases a second single in February, with the debut album ‘The Entire City’ set for release in Spring 2011.

Sisters Leah and Chloe Smith founded Rising Appalachia on their back porch in Georgia, playing simple fiddle and banjo melodies and leaning into their families rich musical traditions. It has since become a globally recognized Americana and world folk ensemble, celebrating a unique blend of Southern-rooted music, storytelling, and community. The band features David Brown (bass, guitar), Duncan Wickel (fiddle, cello), and Biko Casini (percussion), and infuses music with a unique tapestry of Appalachian, Irish and traditional influence but stays connected to simple songwriting. Rising Appalachia has captivated audiences for nearly 2 decades, from busking in New Orleans to touring Europe, and has been featured at prestigious venues like Red Rocks, Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Woodford Folk Fest. Their performances at NPR's Tiny Desk and Preservation Jazz Hall have solidified their status in the folk music scene. Breaking industry norms, the band's approach to music is as much an artistic statement as it is a movement, culminating in their newest album, 'Folk and Anchor' a carefully curated collection of cover songs. This project includes remakes from Bob Dylan to James Blake, Erykah Badu to Beyonce and showcases their eclectic style, inviting listeners into a rich musical journey.
