Featuring heavily in setlists throughout 2004 and 2005, ‘I Wanted To Be Wrong’ was played 33 times in 2004 (89% of shows), and 62 times in 2005 (74% of shows). For most of its run in 2005 it was immediately followed by ‘Final Straw’, which was the usual set flow for every show up to 25 May 2005. After that the setlists were mixed up more, and it would generally be followed by either ‘The One I Love’ or ‘Orange Crush’ for the remainder of the time it was played. It was retired for the last 11 shows of the tour, with Horsens, Denmark the scene of its final performance.

Fun fact: There’s a line in the song ‘You’re Yul Brynner Westworld’ referencing the movie that inspired the current HBO TV series. That series frequently features popular music that has been adapted for the show, including numerous Radiohead songs, but so far no R.E.M. songs in season 1 or 2. I’m hoping for something in the upcoming season 3!

‘Final Straw’ made its debut prior to a Minus 5 performance at a live in-store appearance in Vancouver and went on to be played on a semi-regular basis during the 2003 tour. It became a set regular through 2004 and 2005, usually played after ‘I Wanted To Be Wrong’, but when that song was dropped from setlists in June 2005 it became a semi-regularly played song for the rest of the tour.

By 2008 it was relegated to occasional status, with Copenhagen, Denmark the scene of its final performance.

Fun fact: The demo was originally made available for streaming on remhq.com in March 2003. It was re-recorded for ‘Around The Sun’.

The second song of our 2-way tie for number 37 (only doing 1 song a day from hereon). Debuting at the first show of the 2003 tour in Utrecht, The Netherlands, 4 months before its release on ‘In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003’, this was a very frequently played song, being played at all the 2003 shows, and most of the 2004 and 2005 shows. In 2008 it dropped down to 24 plays (30% of all shows), with its final performance coming at the bands penultimate show in Caracas, Venezuela.

During early performances of the song in 2003, Mike's backing vocals were much less prominent, and Scott McCaughey's vocals were much louder in the chorus. This evolved over time with Mike featuring much more heavily as time went on.

Fun fact: In the liner notes for ‘In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003’ Peter wrote that this song was written in about 15 minutes, and that he hoped he could convince the other guys to write every song this way. Given what we know about the ‘Around The Sun’ recording sessions, it seems he didn’t get his wish!
