The online radio station Retreat Radio has acted as a unifying force on the underground scene in Malmö for close to a decade and now offers its first compilation of original music from its vast community.

A community grown exponentially like a virus, with Retreat Radio as the source of infection, comprised of artists in various stages of despair revelling in hazy ambient, angular industrial rhythms and post-dub influences. Now bringing you 24 tracks of frog-induced head music made for a sad generation that wanted to be club kids but had no club to go to.

Many - if not all - of the names behind this mammoth of a compilation are Retreat residents with current or past monthly shows on the programme. Many of whom have walked the stark lit street at the outskirts of town at night to climb a spiral staircase above a carwash to play their shows.

Loosely centered around the interpretation of dub as a genre, the compilation hand-picks a curation of tracks which nonetheless point to a coherent vision: that of dub as a vital cornerstone in the development of new music reflecting on an urban post-capitalist environment.

Bristol-based @k_means operates at the fringes of electronic music. It's not tempo and genre that unites their sound, but more an exploration of mood and texture underpinned by bass-heavy low ends and hypnotic rhythms. The Noods, Rinse FM and Kiosk Radio regular is also resident at Bristol's Psychotherapy Sessions and will debut at Dekmantel Festival where you should fully expect to be taken into plenty of unknown musical territory.

It is the same with their mix for us this week - a wild trip into futuristic drum patterns and interplanetary sounds that melt the mind and contort the body. There is a constant push and pull between the organic and the synthetic with tribal percussion and warped vocals brushing up with bleeping synth modulations and experimental minimalism. It's a magnetic selection that's as much an imaginary movie soundtrack as it is a dance floor escape.

For almost two decades, I have been tirelessly seeking honesty in music. I aim to find the sounds with which the artist speaks. Soundscapes that make you feel. Atmospheres that not only fill your room (and headphones) but truly transport you into another time and place. I will never forget the first time I heard Abul Mogard’s music. I was mesmerised. His intricate attention to sound design, rich textures, and manipulation of the created environment instantly transformed me into an avid fan. His music didn’t just augment my mood; it seemed to seep into my being, altering the code behind the perception of my mind. I didn’t just listen to his music, I invited it to be a part of my condition. In an effort to delve deeper and spend more time with such music, and more importantly, the composers themselves,  I created Headphone Community, where I feature an artist for an in-depth exploration. In the last three months, I’ve highlighted the sounds of James Murray, Ben Chatwin, and Erik K Skodvin. IFS meets … is an artistic and curatorial project by @kook-on and @fischerle, resulting from their collaboration with three vocalists: @ultrama00, @agf-antye-greie, and @spalarnia. The starting point was the creative process between the producers and vocalists, expressed in attention to the needs of the other person, sharing inspiration, working in the studio, organizing a shared space, and performing together.

From the very beginning, IFS has been characterized by interpersonal relationships and creative collaboration. Initially, it was an exchange of ideas between the initiators of the project, Krzysztof Ostrowski and Mateusz Wysocki, but as IFS developed, the musical horizon began to expand to include additional artists who brought new quality to the producers' work. This interpersonal dimension can be heard particularly clearly on IFS albums and tracks recorded together with rappers ALchinBond, M.STO, Prykson Fisk, Kosim, Bryndal, Ńemy, and Mada. However, it was the album recorded with Japanese vocalist and post-rapper MA, entitled “REIFSMA,” that broke all genre limitations. Released by the Guides label, the album combined Ostrowski and Wysocki’s fascination with a tempo of 160 BPM with MA’s avant-garde vocal strategies. The musicians performed at the Unsound festival, and their debut album was very well received by critics and listeners. Two years after the release of REIFSMA, it was time for a second album.

Initially, the new album was supposed to be just an EP containing three new songs supplemented with remixes of selected tracks from the debut album. However, the idea for the REIFSMA remixes turned into a compilation, which was released in 2024 together with the reissue of the debut album. In turn, the three new tracks that were created at that time marked the beginning of work on the next record.

IFS meets MA - 波動 (HADOW)

A fish dreams in a drum machine. Hidden Operator surfaces, soaked in fog and radio hiss. The fever escapes. Kontra-Musik and Kess Kill hold hands in a burning telephone booth—two labels dancing backwards through a mirror, cackling.

This is a record made of riddles and ruin. Dub coughs in the corner. Proto techno slips on oil. UK hardcore gurgles something unspeakable before melting into a slo-mo house groove with a hangover. Lo-fi? No-fi. High-why. Slightly wrong but utterly intentional.

Basslines stagger like drunks in a maze. Snares in existential crisis. Synths whispering conspiracy theories. This is an apparition. Half dungeon, half dancefloor, half pigeon coop.

Understanding is colonialism. Twitch instead.

The alchemy of techno is forged with a variety of tools. In darkened concrete crucibles, flowering tongues of light leap lapping across flesh slick with sweat, as bass hammers the shape of the sound into the minds throbbing within. In a city that both reveres and takes such institutions of arcane aurals as commonplace, what revelations may yet be gleaned on the dance floor?

The sonic world of Halv Drøm delve deep into this burning question. Weaving science and spirituality into well-established engines of industrial, EBM and post-punk, Saxon Jorgensen’s work seeks to break out of the confines of “dark” music (by this point an overused descriptor, particularly in these crumbling times) to shape something far more imperious and personal. Whereas techno is so often used as a sledgehammer, Jorgensen wields it like an ice-sculptor with a chainsaw.

Rooted in an appreciation of personal magick and political upheaval, accordingly a strong DIY aesthetic is Halv Drøm’s backbone. Field recordings, guitars churned into shrieking maelstroms, binaural frequencies that sidle beneath waves of polyrhythmic experimentation, and a willingness to go beyond comfortable dance patterns are all in play here. Modern electronics and ancient chakra tonal systems form a ritual of harsh healing; imperative in our time.

Barkosina's main influence comes from the Czech underground scene where she grew up. Arriving to UK and staging obscure performance art events RUN, she also hosted three years regular radio show "Contradictions” where she experimented with post-punk, electronic synthpunk and techno. 

Her Dj sets oscillate in between Ambient noise from crepuscular drones to syncopated rhythms, Industrial EBM and from bottom of her heart heavy bass, kicks and vocals. Her mixes evoke stories, their titles are cautionary. These sets/scenarios attempt to explore a complexity of emotions, as in life, its never the same…
As the half of YOD, Barkosina is blending poetry, dark romanticism, corners of Post-Punk, Industrial music movement and rave culture. YOD has released music on Death & Leisure, Khemia, Veyl Records, She lost Kontrol and more to come…..

EDITIONS MEGO/MIDNIGHT SHIFT/SANDWELL DISTRICT

Rivet’s debut album On Feather and Wire – released 20 years into his career at the end of 2020 on the revered Editions Mego label – surprised and delighted with its punk spirit, industrial pulse, sensual atmospherics, and body music flavor, gave us a better sense of what the Malmö favorite is capable of. Hinted at by his work as the body music enthusiast behind Kess Kill record label and the years honing his production skills, first as Grovskopa and then as Rivet, his current sound has a sophisticated slink and a surprisingly accessible twist of pop, while still recognizable in its dance music lineage.

Winter 2023 saw Rivet’s second album ‘L+P-2′ dropped on Midnight Shift Records, with RA calling it, “A touching and occasionally searing portrait of grief through the lens of post-punk techno.” It came with accompanying remixes by artists Hodge, Nik Void, Hüma Utku as well as other friends and affiliates.
In 2023, he worked with electronic musician and composer Luis Pestana and double-bassist Gregory Vartian-Foss for a special SHAPE+/INTONAL commission and performance.

Always working, Rivet's third album ‘Peck Glamour’, due on Editions MEGO in march 2025, recognizes his dancefloor roots. But his other big release for 2025 will be as a producer and mixer of Sandwell District’s new album ‘End Beginnings’ due the same month.
