So I did Like A Version a few months ago and I was really excited to do it (obviously). I decided I wanted to play River by Leon Bridges, which I think is truly one of the greatest songs I've ever heard.

After much discussion with some friends a few people suggested it may not be culturally appropriate to play it, and I was pretty disappointed.
I'm not here to discuss cultural appropration. There are things I don't understand about other cultures and I chose to listen and respect my lack of knowledge didn't allow me to fully understand the context. I didn't want that to be the narrative of my like a version and I deeply care about what music says in the cultural context, not just as an isolated form.

Then Tacey suggested I should just ask Leon Bridges, which I thought was obviously a crazy idea that would never work, but then I wrote him a letter (email really) and my label got it to him....

He listened to me singing it and he gave his blessing. 

Unfortunately it was while we were at rehearsal and without the right preparation it just didn't sound as good as Numb, so we stuck with that song, which is also a stunning song.

Anyway! Here is the demo I recorded of it to pitch it initially. I love this song x

The other day we were listening to a podcast from the New York Times and in it, they had this quote. It was from an author living in a country thinking about the possibility of the atomic bomb being dropped on them. The quote ended with “let that bomb, when it comes, find us doing sensible and human things -- praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts -- not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs.” - CS Lewis

While things like social distancing and the closing of our favorite bars do not allow for the full fruition of this quote it was nonetheless inspiring. So this weekend we headed up to Colorado to be with some of our favorite musicians and create together. We hope this song gives you hope that someday this will be over.
