SILENT LADDER

Am moving to another phase of life
Where sex is sweeter
And the Bible deeper
Here, people look greener
But my head’s not growing bigger

Am learning what it means to love a woman
She cherishes little nothings
And makes bubbles out of dying soap
In her world, little things are big
Like the power of a whisper
And time is her greatest need

Am learning how to be a man
My father never made it easier
Now I see how pain is beautiful
His flaws made me wiser
But at the expense of my dear mother

Am heading further from the ground
Things are changing
The man in me is found
It beats logic to make a lot of noise
Yet expect to gather a mind sound

Sunset may come early or late
But whichever side of darkness you live in
Away or within
There are never right ways
Of doing wrong things

Silent Ladder

This is a compilation of songs and poems I composed from 17-29 years old. I was growing in my faith asking questions about religion, curious with my protest growing in my human rights advocacy, understanding love, patriarchy, and my mind.

The interludes consists of conversations I had with some friends in 2017, some from Kenya and others from the larger African continent.

Eric Onyango Otieno is a Kenyan poet, born and bred in Nairobi. He began writing poetry at the age of sixteen, and has been performing his work in several poetry events including Kwani? Open Mic, A Word & A Mic, Poetry At The Park, Slam Africa, Poetry Spot, Upgrade Poetry, Poetry Under The Stars, Words Galore, among others, since he was twenty, under the stage name ‘’Rixpoet’’. He is the Co-Founder of Fatuma’s Voice, an arts forum that brings people together to discuss societal matters using poetry, music, dance, motivational speaking and other forms of art, and co-runs The Association Of Kenyan Poets, a Facebook group that looks into critiquing its members’ poems and facilitate online discussions and debate on poetry matters. His poetry has been featured in The Power Of Words Anthology, published by the Kenyan Poets Lounge in 2013. He is also involved in mentoring young poets across East Africa and is a social media executive when he is not creating poems. ''Rix'' is also the founder of Siri Zangu, an organization that's out to help people use their traumatic backgrounds for betterment of themselves and their surrounding by having them share their stories to heal.
