As the name implies, "Shedded Skin" is the first Rizik release where I present a fuller, more realized sound than my previous material. There's more to me than piano playing. I tend to make music that feels like a journey or a story rather than stick to a traditional format and I think "Shedded Skin" reflects my journey as an artist to leave behind old skin, i.e. what Rizik ought to be, and just let it... be; naturally, allowing the process of evolution to unfold. I hope you enjoy.

Khalo is the Arabic word for "uncle" -- for whom this song is named after. I was sitting at the piano when I got the text that he had just passed away. Stunned and emotionless at the time, my right hand began hitting the quarter notes you hear in the beginning, which gave birth to the chords, melody and full arrangement -- all of which came to me at that very moment. This song literally wrote itself and I hope it taps into people's emotions in order to help them hold loved ones in their heart as they hear it.

ABOUT RIZIK

R I Ż I K is the artist project of Los Angeles musician and producer Hisham Dahud. 

A self-taught multi-instrumentalist since childhood, Hisham has long been influenced by a wide range of musical styles, but put his creative ambitions on hold for a decade working behind the scenes for music legends like Richie Hawtin, DJ Shadow and Junkie XL. Unable to ignore his own call to create, he hit an emotional breaking point in 2019. 

“That life was never what I was truly after,” he says. “I fell into a supportive role in music because, frankly, I was never brave enough to commit to being a full-time creator myself. I lived adjacent; a textbook example of a  shadow career', but all that's changed." 

After years of supporting other artists, Rizik was born in order to carve his own path. 
"As far as we know, this is the only life we have. I'd rather take a chance and fall on my face saying 'oh well' than asking 'what if' for the rest of my life." 
Hisham adopted the name Rizik, which loosely translates to the Arabic word for "blessing", as a way to commemorate his new path forward. 

“Rizik serves as a reminder to me, and hopefully others, to fully embrace an innate ability that makes you feel complete," he says. "This has been a cathartic endeavor and hopefully it can serve as a ray of light to anyone stuck in the shadows of their own self-doubt."

The first time I heard Essáy's gorgeous "State of Mind", I was instantly transported to somewhere infinite. I felt compelled to churn out my own version incorporating live drums, new layers, and a message I feel resonates with the mood this track brings.

After putting his creative aspirations on hold for over a decade, 32-year-old Hisham Dahud decided it was now or never.

After a successful run as a respected music marketer and artist educator, he hit an emotional breaking point in 2019 and could no longer ignore the call of artistry.

“Despite whatever success I was seeing on the business side of music, I never once felt this what I was really after,” he says. “I kept honing my craft basically in secret and thinking deeply about who I wanted to be as an artist. The more I followed (and in some cases, even worked with) artists I loved and respected, the more I kept feeling, 'I belong on the creator's side.'"

A self-taught musician since childhood, his artist name Rizik loosely translates to "blessing" in Arabic... but also holds deeper meaning.

“It serves as a reminder to never let go of this innate ability," he says. "I’ve been too scared to fully embrace and accept it as a path for my life—a classic case of imposter syndrome, something I've been battling nearly all my life."

Rizik also happens to be Hisham's mother’s maiden name—his greatest supporter and someone who always trusted him to make the right decisions. This project is also an homage to her.

Rizik returns with the emotionally-fueled "Safe & Sound." Employing signature piano rhythms with spacious textures and orchestral arrangements, the song walks you through the emotional contrast between dark and light.

"I definitely went a bit more cinematic on this one," Rizik says. "While piano definitely drives this and most of my earlier records, I actually wouldn't call myself a full-on pianist. I play a lot of instruments and the act of playing is where the real fun of composition is for me."

As a fan of film scores, the addition of orchestral arrangements to Rizik's sound was only a matter of time.

"I love film and have countless scores etched into my brain over the years," he says. "I even view my own life as a film-in-progress; the hero's journey if you will. I listen to film scores and reapply them as soundtracks to my life... hopefully people recognize their own stories in this piece as well."

Safe & Sound

@Brothertiger is an artist I've been excited about for several years. His lyrics are always relatable and the atmosphere he creates in his music puts in me in a place I've never visited, never seen, nor never heard of... but know my soul belongs in. So when he made the stems to 'Paradise Lost' available for remixing, I had to jump on it. 

Normally categorized as a chillwave artist, I wanted to take a more spacious, ethereal and cinematic approach to Brothertiger. I opened up the track to really let his lyrics take centerstage while infusing what I like to think is 'my thing' with piano, orchestral arrangements and big crescendos to allow for raw emotion over anything else.
