The day we moved into the old farm house we rented from Don and Joyce Squibb in the Sulphur Springs community in Washington County, Tennessee in September of 1970, I went to Slagle's Market, the closest store, to buy some food and supplies.
After I paid up, I asked the storekeeper, Tom Slagle, if he knew any old time musicians in the area. He replied, "Why, I am an old time musician!" An ex-professional old time country musician who sang in a gospel quartet but still
played in jam sessions with other local old time musicians. Tom Slagle introduced me to area musicians including the great 2 finger banjo player Will Keys, fiddlers Walter Harmon and guitarist Vestal Jackson. Here they are performing "Hold Fast To The Right" in a recording by Doug Dorschug from "Down Around Bowmantown" (1987):

Fiddler Bill Adams from Limestone, Tennessee plays a lively, bluesy version of "Whistling Rufus" with three other veteran Washington County old time musicians, Tom Slagle and Vestal Jackson, guitars, and 2 finger banjo master Will Keys. Clint Howard, old time mountain singer and guitarist, was one of my
musical heroes. A native of Shouns, Johnson County, Tennessee, Clint Howard
and his neighbor fiddler Fred Price accompanied Clarence "Tom" Ashley when the Friends Of Old Time Music presented them in concert in New York City in 1961. The fourth member of the group, Doc Watson, was from Boone, North Carolina.
The entire group, and particularly Doc, wowed the audience including myself.
When I moved to East Tennessee in 1970, I visited Fred and Clint and played music with them over the years. When Doug Dorschug moved to Johnson County, TN, the two of us began playing with Fred, Clint and their sons. In 1983, Doug produced an  album of their music, "Looking Off Down The Road" for Old Homestead  including myself on fiddle, Doug on banjo, Clint's son Clarence on lead Doc Watson style guitar and Bob White (?) on bass backing up Clint. I learned this version of "Grub Springs" from fiddler Allan Block in his sandal shop on West 4th Street in New York City's Greenwich Village circa 1965-66. Allan's version was based upon Mississippi fiddler W.E. Claunch's recording of "Grub Springs" for the Library Of Congress. In 1982, Dour Dorschug produced a cassette of my music, "Tune In On My Memories" (Cloudland 003). Doug expertly accompanies my fiddle on guitar.

Fiddler J. D. (Dedrick) Harris was born around 1868 in Flag Pond, Tennessee. Though a Tennessean, he lived in Asheville and Andrews, North Carolina for part of his life, In 1924, he and banjoist Ernest Helton recorded several tunes for Broadway Records, including "Whip The Devil Round The Stump" aka "Booger Man." This tune is known by both titles in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina:
