Amazingly it's been 8 years since vol 4! Since then not only have I filled in a few more gaps in my Dillinja collection, a bunch of his golden unreleased tracks from the 90s have since been released on Deep Jungle, Dom & Roland Productions and V Recordings.

So it felt like the right time for another installment - the longest yet at 2 hours (there was a lot to cram in!).

The sheer volume of work he put out in the 90s is staggering - there's still a few records I'm yet to collect and I've been at it for years. And imagine you're that good that your unreleased stuff from the 25 years ago still sounds as good, if not better than anything produced today? Legend.

From 1994-1997 Fabio hosted a seminal radio show on Kiss FM. He would alternate each show with Grooverider and it was the first time jungle was played on legal radio. It was essential listening for music that wouldn't normally get played out, or even heard again! These shows were a window into another world and fresh 90-minute TDKs on hot standby was standard procedure. 

For the second hour of the show, Fabio would announce "The Jazzstep coming up next...", and after a few months it became "The Legendary Jazzstep..." - this was big!

The music was jazz-influenced and driven by funk breaks, which tended to be quite loose with the patterns. It was a golden era before things got stripped back to more surgical timings seen with liquid, it also made the sound feel more organic and musical.

This mix attempts to recreate the feeling of these shows with dreamy sax, epic keyboard solos, cool double bass and the funkiest of breakbeat grooves. Featuring music from Carlito, Subject 13, Hidden Agenda, Primary Motive and early Creative Source - some of the finest drum and bass ever made.

It was recorded from a mixture of both vinyl and digital, and it wouldn't be right for the Jazzstep show if there wasn't a couple of dubplates in there as well: a very jazzy something forthcoming on Make or Break from Deeptropix, and an unreleased collab track from Sekl @sekldnb and Rough Territory @Rough-Territory

Even during the peak era of the jungle, this music was considered quite a niche sound, but Fabio was a pioneer with a true passion and love for the music. Big respects to Fabio for doing his own thing and giving the music a platform for all to appreciate.
