These songs were commissioned by Julianne Laird for her doctoral recital at West Virginia University. As a native of West Virginia, I relished the opportunity to engage with my Appalachian heritage. I adapted the folk tunes in a "classical" style, much as Vaughan Williams or Holst did with English tunes a century earlier. I hope my settings tell the stories well!
