Written for a recent production of 'Our Country's Good', performed in Oxford. Lyrics are adapted from a Convict's Ballad.

The Last Time

This road’s well travelled,
Your Father would be driving,
But circumstances change
Like people, like lives. 

The journey’s been long
And it’s years since we’ve come here.
Mother are you frightened
Of saying goodbye. 

I try not to wear my heart on my sleeve,
I didn’t know how I would grieve this time. 
I grieve for the woman that he loved,
I know she loved him dearly. 

Somebody handed her a red, red rose
There were tears in her eyes. 
They said cherish it for him, 
And she replied, 
I always thought I’d see him 
One last time. 

Draw out your sorrows
In a box full of paints. 
I don’t know what you grieve for
But I see your pain. 

He might have been a painter
If he’d had a steady hand
Would it have made him any different
Or a better man. 

You wonder if you’d been similar in a thousand different ways 
As you learn how he passed his days
And about the man that he’d become.
I know you loved him dearly.

I’m no longer certain 
I remember his face.

Mother there are tears
On the letters he wrote you,
So much left unsaid 
And it’s slipping away. 

Don’t let it hurt you, it’s a sadness I know you can bear
You always played your part with grace.
